Females of RYL because I love you and care about you very much...

Before I launch into my little rant, I can see no reason why a post like this would not be allowed. I have checked the rules and it doesn't seem to break any. I haven't labeled this *Adult* as any female can benefit from reading this and I don't believe this is an adult topic.

I've recently become more and more shocked that women do not understand the health implications of using disposable menstrual products or that they have not even considered the environmental implications. Obviously everyone should be free to make their own choice based on what works best for them but many women just aren't aware of the options they actually have.

Why tampons can be harmful to you and the environment:

Blah. Tampons D:

Menstrual cups kinda weird me out a bit though for some reason o.o;;

Liar. 19-07-2009 12:57 PM

Thats vile.
Its not the kind of thing you want to re-use.
And i dont really give a flying ***** about the environment.

:)

That's you prerogative but I think the use of the word vile was unnecessary and somewhat hurtful

The One Who 19-07-2009 01:02 PM

Washable pads? I draw the line at that. Mooncups and the like are great if you can use them, but some can't (flow might be too heavy) and some simply don't want to, especially if needing to wash it in a public place.

Liar. 19-07-2009 01:02 PM

Its hurtful that i think reusing that stuff is vile?
Wow.
Grow some balls, you posted a thread that was bound to have at least SOME people with the same opinion as mine. Yet you expected everyone to be nice about it?
Dreaming.

The Ladycup company make great cups for women with a heavier flow that fold up really small yet still hold a LOT of blood. In all honesty, the average amount of blood lost by women is about 3/4 cups full of a Mooncup so even with a heavier flow a standard sized cup is feasible. I'm not saying it's ideal for everyone but there are ways around it. And if people don't want to then that's fine, I'm just putting the information out there.

It seemed to suggest that anyone who made these choices for their body was vile. I don't really think that throwing tens of thousands of pieces of bloody rayon into a landfill is very nice but I'd never tell someone it was vile. Hey, maybe I'm just too polite?

Rawrk 19-07-2009 01:11 PM

Ew, reusable?

Oliviaface 19-07-2009 01:12 PM

Yeah, I heard a story about how someone got a mooncup stuck up them. I do agree with Bee, and find the whole idea vile, so vile I didn't read all the links you were spurting out at us.

Just because they're good for the environment, doesn't mean they're good for me.

Yep.
Contrary to popular belief, tampons and pads are actually far from sterile.
The only way to actually ensure that something is sterile is to sterilize it yourself so in many ways reusing despite sounding odd is much cleaner.

Liar. 19-07-2009 01:14 PM

But i didnt say the people were vile, if you go back and read it it clearly said "that's vile" not "theyre vile" or "if you use that you are vile."
You put all of your other rubbish into the landfil (bar any recycling you may do) so why is it any different to putting these in the rubbish with that?

WHAT.

Oh hell that's it, I'ma stick with pads

Rawrk 19-07-2009 01:15 PM

That's really, really disgusting. Really.
Why would you want to reuse something like that?
><

I'm a tampons girl, but I swear it was someone on here. One minute, let me try and find the thread.

It isn't.
But I do try to minimize the amount of rubbish I throw away.
I recycle everything possible and all biodegradable waste is composted.

akita 19-07-2009 01:17 PM

WTF reusable pads? ewwwwwww

Once and only once for me.

Right then. I used one today.
Felt uncomfortable so thought I'd take it out and start again but I couldn't get it out. I tried and tried and tried. Squated and all other positions.
It was STUCK.

I ended up going to GP walk in clinic at hosp. The Dr couldn't get it out! So called the Gynea team and I went to main A&E bit where the Gynea Dr also couldn't get it out!
He called his senior who came with laughing gas! Ooooo That is nice isn't it!?

Anyway after 3 hours there they got it out. I had laughing gas my ipod and a post menepausal lady to distract me.

I was VERY anxious (due to 'issues') and they were very good.
And suggested I don't use it again!

I'm going no where near a moon cup again! Not how I wanted to spend my Saturday.

And to think I started this thread!
Hahaha, aren't moon cups funny little buggers?

I believe it was Jodie (Kelpie), compare one isolated incident (obviously there will have been more) to a probably far higher number of women that get tampons stuck or develop TSS it probably doesn't make a very convincing argument.

Damnation. 19-07-2009 01:19 PM

DO NOT WANT

Oliviaface 19-07-2009 01:21 PM

I'd still rather not have a piece of plastic up me, thanks.

I'd rather take the chance of using tampons properly, or pads which have NO chance of getting stuck inside you, than have a piece of plastic or silicon stuck in me. You didn't really make a very convincing argument either, but I do think this thread belongs in N&D.

Rawrk 19-07-2009 01:21 PM

DD:
its okay, pads are totally fine.

Liar. 19-07-2009 01:23 PM

Composts arent as good for the environment as they are made to seem.
Do you drive? Or catch public transport?

Id much rather kill the world and not stick things up my fanny more than once than be that tiny little bit more envoronmentally friendly.

l'il esky 19-07-2009 01:24 PM

thankfully im on the mini pill so i havent had any periods for about 4months now so i dont need to use anything, saving the environment and my money!
i totally get the idea of these things but for me the blood is the bit i dont like, altho strangly normal blood dont bother me. i think it would make me more concious of my periods and i used to try and forget them as much as poss. but def a good idea if you can get your head round it

Casper_Fading 19-07-2009 01:25 PM

Oh gross. I gag at the thought. And you really need to put a warning of some sort in the title saying that this is potentially really gross. Cause... it is. I dont' care if they're bad for the environment... I realy and truly don't. The thought of washing my own stuff? UGH! My stomach is churning right now.

XxLostxX 19-07-2009 01:25 PM

eww. Nah i'll stick to tampons thanks.. Somethings just wern't made to be reused. It's like reusing toliet paper!... :S

Just my opinion though.

Oliviaface 19-07-2009 01:26 PM

Just my opinion though.

People do that actually.
Like cloth nappies and cloth baby wipes, you can also use the wipes as toilet paper.
I think most people tend just to use them after urination.

Rawrk 19-07-2009 01:29 PM

i dont understand why you would want to reuse toilet paper/sanitary towels/tampons.

><

that's just disgusting.

Sounds delightful D:

How long 'til someone suggests we should do that?

Liar. 19-07-2009 01:30 PM

ANYONE who reuses toilet paper truely takes the medal.
Thats absolutely disgusting.
We arent in the roman times anymore, and the world isnt in that dire need of saving that we have to resort to reusing simple thigns like that.
Cloth nappies and toilet paper are very different things.

You havent made a decent arguement to begin with so continuing with it now just makes you look a little bit dumb.

Oliviaface 19-07-2009 01:31 PM

The title of this immediately made me want to punch and stab things.

Sonic Dreams 19-07-2009 01:33 PM

I am weirded out.

I am never going near any girls ever again.

XxLostxX 19-07-2009 01:35 PM

This discussion will just go round in circles for hours..

It's disgusting in my personal opinion.. if people choose to reuse their sanitary products its up to them.. but i wont be joining them.

they invented disposables for a reason...

Leaving the thread.. its just making me feel slightly sick.

Shadowsaurus 19-07-2009 01:39 PM

Thank heavens for the Contraceptive Implant. No periods for 3 years wooo!

But I dunno, I don't like the idea of re-using something that get covered in stinky manky red stuffs.
Also, by machine washing the cloth re useable ones, isn't that bad for the environment anyway? All that electricity and water being used to clean it.

I dunno... ew.

Sonic Dreams 19-07-2009 01:43 PM

This thread is like a drug.

I hate it, and it grosses me out.

But I keep coming back. ;[

Damn you girls and your fascinatingly disgusting physiology.

XxXflowerfairyXxX 19-07-2009 01:44 PM

Look, to be honest I didn't think this would be met so negatively.
I didn't think I had to make an argument.
I thought if I could just stop and make people think about the options available to them then that would be a nice thing to do.
Btu apparently no one wants to hear.
Lets just forget about this as clearly no one has anything positive to say.
What would be wrong with saying "hey it's not for me but if you want to that's fine"?
I mean really I feel as if society had pushed women into feeling as if this is something disgusting, it's just a little bit of blood.
I didn't expect everyone to turn around ad say that it was great but I didn't expect to feel like quite such a minority either.

laughingdoll 19-07-2009 01:46 PM

Everyone is going to have theyre own opinion on this thread.
I think a hell of people are going to say it's wrong, and disgusting.
Personally, I'm quite happy with what I use, but at the end of the day, Each to they're own.

I mean good luck with it if thats your choice but just not for me thanks. I am actually quite stunned at this thread. Just wow.

Sometimes Crazy 19-07-2009 01:50 PM

...what's wrong with a tampon/sanitary towel? :ermm:

Am sorry I haven't read all the links - the image of the inverted condom the woman was holding on the UK cup site and imagining that in my coochy kind of made me die inside...

Grunge Rock Princess 19-07-2009 01:50 PM

It was quite interesting to see the options and this thread is quite eye opening. I think some people need to be a bit more open-minded.

Fallen Rain 19-07-2009 01:53 PM

Yeah could someone tell me what's wrong with using sanitary towels and all that stuff you get from a pharmacy (ie advertised by doctors as the way to go) etc without me clicking on scary links in a male household. :(

Personally... O_O
