View Full Version : window size

So I know this is really minor, but... It seems that however big or small I make my browser window, RYL is just a little too wide to fit in the window, so I end up with a horizontal scroll bar for the extra centimeter no matter what size I make the window. It didn't used to do that. And it's driving me crazy, cause I keep scrolling horizontally by accident when I mean to just scroll vertically. Plus I'm kinda OCD and having a horizontal scroll bar just bugs me.

If you go to Start > Control Panel > Display and then click on the Settings tab, what display resolution is shown under the slider on the left hand side? If the slider isn't set all the way to the right, you're not running your screen at its optimum resolution. If this is the case, move it to the right and press the Apply button.

You should now find that when you maximise your browser Window, RYL fits :)

EDIT: You'll need a different set of instructions to those above if you're running Windows Vista

My display resolution is at 1440 x 900, which is the maximum resolution on my Macbook :-p

Anyway, that's not the issue. RYL changes size to fit my browser window - it even fits on my iPhone. It's just that now it changes size to fit plus an extra inch or so of blue on the right.

Sorry, on closer inspection, this actually appears to be a bug with RYL and Safari. We have a few known Safari issues we need to fix actually.

I'll ask Harley if he is able to look into it as soon as he has time.

It's not an ideal solution, but if you're on a Mac - the Camino browser might be a temporary workaround.

Hmm... I think having to open a different browser would be more annoying than the scroll bar is - it's not like it makes the site unusable or anything, I just figured it was probably a bug that you guys might want to know about... and if it helps, I'm pretty sure it's a very recent bug...

I'm having the same problem on Firefox.

Will check the resolution thingy now, but im pretty sure that's set at max.

Oh, and James, I'm running Vista, so...

I can't be bothered to download other browsers right now, but I have the same problem in Firefox as well. And also in Internet Explorer, but considering the last Mac version was 5.2, I don't think that counts for much. But it's definitely not unique to Safari.

This is a confirmed bug in the RYL page code. I'll pass details on to Harley and we'll see what we can do.

Is this a new thing or have people just neglected to tell me about this earlier?

Does it happen on ALL RYL pages?

Does it happen on the main site / top menu / not forum pages?

Does it happen on www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/shop.php (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/shop.php) and www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/live.php (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/live.php)?

As far as I am aware, no changes could possibly have caused this.

If someone or a few of you could give me the exact browser version number they have where it fails, I will reproduce it and then I will be able to fix it.

Thanks

I noticed the scroll bar a few days ago, cant remember when exactly

It is happening on the above links, and on the main site. It is happening on any page I have been on

I am running firefox version 2.0.0.12.

Hope the above is helpful, im useless at techy stuff!!

Crazy. No code has been changed that is shared between the main site and forum - probably for a matter of months.

Indeed the code the RYL displays for pages on the main site are in no way connected to the code in the forums - completetly different files that happen to look up the same data.

This would appear to be an HTML coding issue, with a table width set too high or a break point syntax error or something.

But having it break in two places at once when I havn't touched anything is certainly confusing!

Good old RYL, got a life of it's own!

Thanks for the info, I will try and reproduce it later, once I have it shouldn't take me long to pin it down,

Thanks :)

No problem, glad I could be helpful -)

Hmm, I am running vista and Firefox 2.0.0.12 and it is just fine.

That means it isnt an issue with the browser itself rendering it wrong.

Has this been happening for some people for a long time?

It happens on all RYL pages, including the ones you linked to for me too. And for me at least, it's relatively new, within the last couple days. I think I first noticed it the day before I posted here, so probably Saturday night.

I'm running Safari 3.0.4 with Mac OS 10.5.2. I also tried Firefox 1.5.0.12 and Internet Explorer 5.2.3 (obviously both are the Mac versions), and saw the same thing.

I just checked in IE on the same computer. It has no scroll bar there -/ The IE version is
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

although that number might be the wrong thing -/

Using Firefox 2.0.0.12

I have two monitors, one 1440x900 and one 1280x960. I get the problem when ryl is maximised on the 1280x960 monitor but not when it's maximised on the 1440x900 monitor.

It's like part of the page is hiding behind the vertical scrollbar, so you need a horizontal scrollbar too. I got it on all the links you provided, but this page (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-2-23&e=74&c=2) was small enough to not need a vertical scrollbar, so it didn't get a horizontal scrollbar either.

Can anyone confirm to me whether this horizontal scroll bar ever appears when the vertical scrollbar is NOT there?

If I send you to a page that definately doesn't go vertically very far - http://www.recoveryourlife.com/index.php?categoryid=125 - do you still get it there?

Thanks :)

Nope, no horizontal scroll bar from that link.

When I scroll right all I get is a bar of blue, behind the vertical scroll bar - it's not like the actual forum has stretched, more something's been added on, if that makes sense?

I sent you screenshots of both when it's all the way to the left, and what happens if I scroll to the right. You should be getting those - let me know if you don't.

I found I have been getting the scrolling bar where the thread is huge i.e. the queendom.

I put this down to the page numbers being to many to fit the screen so to speak.

I just found I had a failure notice thing for the email I sent the screenshots in, so I'll just post them here...

Sorry that email was missing the i from life!

I have no desire to help people recover their lfes, sorry!

I have just made one small change, any change that has magically fixed it with almost no effort?
