View Full Version : Pictures/journals/other little quirks

Sometimes, but not all the time, when I come onto RYL I get a few problems. These all happen in the same "session" so to speak. Anyway, firstly, when I click on the Member Journals link at the top of the page [the second toolbar] it doesn't do anything, and just kinda directs me halfway down whatever page I happen to be viewing at the time. And when I hover over it no little dropdown thing comes up [I can't remember if you have to click and/or hover normally, so I tried both]. Also, yesterday I posted a picture of myself in a thread, and I can't see it [or any other pictures that aren't attatched, e.g. photobucket, imageshack etc] today - but I know it's definatly still there. I also can't post any emoticons, as I just tried to do the one with one eye bigger than the other. Unless you can see it and I can't... I'm running Window's Vista, and Firefox as a web browser. I'm just about log off and close down this and see if it happens again, firstly in firefox and then in IE.

And it wouldn't let me do paragraphs. *tries to put one in between here and here*

Okay, I just logged out/closed firefox and started it back up again, and I'm getting the same problems. But, as far as I can remember, this doesn't happen ALL the time. *goes to play with IE and safari*

To add - I can't do paragraphs in the journals.

What, the enter button ignores you?
These are really odd things that can only be caused by browsers - try emptying your cache / temp files, and/or restart your machine?
The RYL server serves code for say Journal Link, and it serves the same thing every time - so unless it is breaking for everyone it is most likely to be your end.
Really odd, keep me posted

Right, I haven't done anything different, and it's fine now. And it was fine yesterday evening too, and I hadn't even turned my laptop off.
I THINK I may have had the same problem in the beginning of v.3, but I'm not entirely sure.
And I've never been able to do paragraphs if I comment a journal... I didn't think you were able to.

That's right Harley, just blame the browser.
I do actually have a point to add to this. Erm. YES. RYL is being funny with me, now I know I've had problems with my internet, BUT, there are still times when RYL just stops working on me and I get disconnected from chat. Some of these times it is my net, and all my websites and MSN stop working, but it's starting to be that my MSN is fine and when I navigate away from RYL everything's working well too.
Now. Is this some freaky form of punishment my internet/laptop has thought up for me, or could the be an issue with RYL?

I've had a formatting problem before... where the thing I sent turned out in a completely different format to what I wrote...

Are we talking the whole site doing that, or just chat? How exactly does RYL 'stop working for you' you can't load any RYL pages but can other sites?
I've a feeling some timeout values might be causing these random disconnections, as the server is fine and not spewing any errors. We get logs if anything breaks, and everything is running better than ever at the moment. MSN has large timeout values so you can have your wireless drop in and out and not have MSN disconnect all the time - I can't get at the timeout values for chat, but again I will ask the company about it and get it sorted.
The trouble is, RYL needs to work on ever one of millions on configurations of computer, hardware, internet connection, software, browser, browser version, security settings, plugins... you get the drift. Million of combinations in fact doesn't even get close.
And yeah, 99.9% of the time it is your end, not ours :P

Sophie,
Didn't work? Sent? Where? What?
I cannot even get close to speculating on issues if I don't have ALL the information!
You can't ring up a garage and say 'my car isn't working, what wrong with it?'
And if you paste content in from somewhere else, that already contains formatting code - like any word document, HTML pages etc it will not work unless you clear all formatting using the clear formatting tool - and will display differently. RYL is displaying the code you pasted, even if it looks different in the textbox, which doesnt display all formatting like HTML code etc.

Not sure about timeout... I was once on chat late and may have fallen asleep for a couple of hours *coughs* and when I woke up people were still chatting... must have been around 2 to 3 hours or so. Would it have a timeout message if it was that do you know?

Timeouts work slightly differently. We should have non activity timeouts, but the timeouts to which I am referring are internal, basically the time chat is prepared to wait for a slow browser or slow http transfer.
If RYL is very busy, or your net connection is, or your ISP has a lot of packets running through it that split second, it can delay the response your browser gives to chat, which, if the timeouts are set too low might feel you have gone away, hence it disconnects you.
This could happen in the middle of typing as much as if you were away for an hour.
Oh and Mod forums might render stuff differently from normal forums Sophie, so this probs doesn't apply in here or to the rest of the community - I sall reply in there for you.

Chels, the issues you provide sound like an authentication/cookie issue (attachments in threads are denied to some clients who are not logged in).
Glad Safari worked (in fact it's one of the best browsers for use with RYL) - let me know though if you do manage to make any headway with IE at some point. Any info we can gather can of course be used to sort things more easily for other members :)

I normally use firefox, not IE.
I don't understand why it's okay most of the time, but not okay like, 5% of the time...?
