Risperidone for challenging behaviour and OCD.

I've tried 5 different antidepressants for my OCD, but I always end up getting increased challenging behaviour and meltdowns on them, mainly because I get so "wired up" on antidepressants.

I've stopped taking my mirtazapine as it was making me go mad. I'm seeing my psychiatrist on Friday.

I'm going to ask for low dose risperidone that I could take in the morning.

I am on 20mg olanzapine at night but I get no side effects on it as I've been on that dose for nearly 6 years.

I've been on polypharmacy before.

Risperidone is used in the USA for challenging behaviour in autistic kids. I'm in the UK but I'm thinking risperidone would help. As olanzapine does f all for my autism / OCD.

Can anyone share their experiences with risperidone. I was on it briefly when I was 15 but I can't remember if it helped or not. I'm 25 now.

I used to work with a few people with severely challenging behaviour because of autism. A couple of people were on risperidone and it seemed to be really effective for them.


It is OK to ask your psychiatrist about it if you think it could help you. I hope your appointment goes well.

Hi Oly,
I currently work with two people who are on risperidone for challenging behaviour due to autism. I didn't know them before they were put on it, but one of them has reduced the dose recently. She hasn't had an increase in challenging behaviours with the reduced dose, so I'm not sure risperidone helped her.
The second person, I have seen miss a dose, and there was an increase in behaviours, so I think it helps him.
I think it's definitely worth asking about. Hopefully you and your psychiatrist will be able to find something that works well for you.

Thanks. I'm seeing her on Friday. Will update you afterwards regarding risperidone. My arms bleed from where I've been biting at them as part of meltdowns.
