I've been wondering for a while if I could have a mood disorder and then yesterday I had a big mood swing and was hoping someone with experience in this could tell me if it's possible.

My sister and I were walking from the library to my moms office and as soon as we got outside I started kicking my legs and swinging my arms and sing. I was acting really weird and talkative. There was a man walking across from us and I didn't even care how I was acting even though I'm usually pretty shy.

After we got there and started driving to church I got really low and didn't feel like talking or moving or eating. It came on very suddenly. One minute I was talking and I guess perky, would be the word, and then my mood just fell. From the time I got hyper to the time I got quiet was 40 minutes. I think this was the most dramatic swing I've had. At least that I can remember. Am I over reacting or could there be something?

How old are you?

None of us can diagnose you one way or the other, so it would be worth speaking to a mental health professional about your concerns, if these mood swings are concerning. Mood swings are quite normal, especially if you are going through puberty, but of course there is a line where this becomes symptomatic of an illness rather than just normal mood swings, so it would be worth speaking to someone.

Hi,

I should first point out that I cannot diagnose you as I am not perfessional. But I tell you about my experiences with mood.

I was like this when I a teenager. I could swing from happy to depressed to happy to depressed all within an hour period. At the time my parents asked my psychitrsist if I had bipolar but as far as I am aware bi-polar has to have a lot longer between swings and would be days/weeks/months of feeling depressed/high mood.

I have since been diagnosed with "Emontially Unstable Personality Disorder" (or borderline personality disorder "BPD") which I think is because my moods can be so fast changing. Over the years I do not have such fast and swings as frequently. However when I'm struggling a lot I do tend to go from very depressed to quiet happy for a really short time before crashing back to depressed.
