I just wondered if anyone had received psychodynamic therapy at any point? It's something my nurse and psychologist want me to do, and I did have one session of it but didn't really understand the concept.
If anyone has done it, or is doing it.. What's it actually for/do you find it helpful?
I've had dbt/cbt but they now think that those therapies wouldn't be useful to me.
Thanks in advance :)

I have :) It's based on Freudian theory so it focuses a lot on what happened in your childhood and how it relates to the present day. In our therapy we talked a lot about stuff that had happened when I was younger that caused subconscious feelings of guilt and so on. It was one of the most helpful therapies I've had x

i've not had it but i understand it can be rather useful in helping you understand why you have certain feelings and behaviors in your life now. it is meant to be especially useful if you have had a troubled childhood or experianced a traumatic one

I was assessed for it but the psychologist said that it would be useless for me. But that's probably due to my autism, so I hope it helps you.

It is usually used to help people relate their current experiences to past traumatic ones.
I am having psychodynamic therapy and have been for 4 years. I am having it privately. I personally have found some of it helpful. It has given a lot more insight and self-awareness surrounding my emotions, thoughts and behaviours. Which over time has been helpful in my relationships and understanding it's impact on them. It has been helpful in understanding the reasons behind emotions that I didn't before.
So far I haven't been able to change my self destructive behaviours using the insight I have gain but I am very aware aware of the connection between them and my past experiences.
However even after this long period with the therapy I remain unable to properly 'move on' 'let go' of childhood experiences and continue to have flashbacks.
I hope you find it helpful.

Thankyou. The main reason they want me to do it is to try and deal with something that happened a few years ago. Although they think that isn't the "root cause" and want to try and figure out what is. It's just I block a lot of things out and I'm not that in touch with my emotions/I don't understand why I feel like I do. Though at the same time they worry I'm not strong enough at the minute to deal with it, they think that I wouldn't cope with it.

I've had psychodynamic therapy called scheme therapy. It helped a bit, but didn't fix everything. I think that is because i wasn't assessed 100% correctly in the first instance so my treatment package as a whole wasn't 100% effective as a result. But, for the trauma stuff, it helped quite a lot and calmed things down. Now when I am triggered there is a possibly definitive trigger opposed to being out the blue.
So that's an improvement I suppose. X

I've been having Psychodynamic therapy for a year now and prior to that, tried all types of therapy. I find Psychodynamic therapy very difficult although very helpful as the majority of my problems are linked to past events. You really need to feel comfortable with the person you're working with else it doesn't really work.
DM me if you want to talk further, take care.

Finding connections between past and present can be really challenging emotionally, but also helpful in developing insight and identifying emotions. I did this therapy for a short period but my risk level was too high and I couldn't cope with the intensity of it. I'm now having CAT which involves psychodynamic theory but is less intense in terms of thinking about trauma, and I find it really helpful.
