I saw my psych today.

He said "people with bpd get psychosis often but your psychosis is more like a schizophrenic type illness not like bpd psychosis"

What's the difference dose anyone know?
I didn't quite get what he was on about?

This is a very contentious issue. What I am about to say is based on my own experience, and my psychiatrist's perspective. Other people may have different experiences.

Typically, those diagnosed with BPD may experience psychosis but this tends to be when they are stressed or distressed. It may go on for some time, but it tends to be more transient in nature. It is more likely to be consistent with how the person is feeling or what they are thinking, for example hearing self-harm commands when the person is experiencing urges to self-harm. It is less likely to respond to anti-psychotic medication and can be described as more dissociative than psychotic.

Those diagnosed with schizophrenia are more likely to experience psychotic symptoms consistently, and across all settings and emotional states. Some symptoms may be generally mood related (positive or negative), but can also be pretty neutral, for example hearing voices commenting on everyday activities. Hallucinations tend to come with more delusional beliefs, such as thinking that you have magical powers or are in a position of power. Psychotic symptoms seem to be better relieved by medication than in BPD.

I hope that helps somewhat.
