View Full Version : I can't sleep at night - I can't stay awake during the day

I am so frustrated. I spent 9 days in the psych hospital at the end of last month. The psych doc got the depression/self-injury/suicidal thought stuff way down - which I appreciate. However, now I cannot sleep at night and am afraid to drive during the day because I am so tired. I cannot drive even 45 minutes anymore.
My psych doc just tried me on Lunesta, but it's not doing a thing for me. I've also recently been on Trazodone, Klonopin, and Melatonin. Has anybody had trouble with daytime sleepiness? Any meds that helped?
I'm losing my mind - and my sleep.

Sleep reversal is common in people with depression - have you talked to your psych or gp about it? they may be able to help you.
also look up sleep hygiene for tips on how to sleep better at night.

Speaking to a pharmacist and/or your psych/GP would probably be your best bet.
When I have long standing sleep issues I find I tend to sleep more during the day. Improving my sleep at night and my underlying mood issue tends to improves the daytime sleeping and general drowsiness.
Do you have much support since you have been discharged?

Hi there, as others have said speaking to your GP or psych would be most helpful for you as they can change your meds and guide you in the right direction.
The Sleep Foundation (http://sleepfoundation.org/ask-the-expert/sleep-hygiene) website has quite a lot of information on how to improve your sleep hygiene as well as tips to help you sleep.
Take care.

Thank you all. I saw my psych yesterday and he gave me back the medications that seemed to help last week. I took them without permission Monday night and slept wonderfully - 9 hrs. Unfortunately, now that he's prescribed them...I only got 6 hours and 50 minutes of sleep again. Oh well...just keep fighting day by day. I'll look at the sleep hygiene website. Thanks again for your thoughts.
Oh, and Tiptoes...I've had support from my mom since discharge (I'm staying with my parents). I also went back and did some outpatient work at the hospital. I saw the hospital doctor a few times, but he just kept drastically switching my meds around - I couldn't handle that.
