I thought I'd put this here instead of moving forward because it comes with a question!

Soooo, after being under mental health services for 10 years, being in hospital for 8 of those years, I'VE BEEN DISCHARGED FROM THE CMHT!!!!! :hop:

I'm incredibly happy because now I can be a 'normal' 22 year old without being held back!

And the question: As some of you may know, the private psych I saw diagnosed me with cyclothymia (which fits a lot better) and was clear that she did not think I had BPD or schizophrenia although it was never acknowledged by the CMHT, I think partly because the psych is likely a junior doctor and partly because I was being discharged anyway but they didn't disagree with it when I brought it up. The CMHT psych also seemed to realise that I wasn't in just a 'good mood' in the last appointment and I was actually hypomanic/manic/not normal happiness.
So if I have to tell anyone what my diagnosis is, like occupational health or at A&E, what would I say?
I'm not sure if there are any rules that say you can only be diagnosed by your treating psych or by any psych.

Most of the time there's just a big box of "have you suffered with ... in the last five years" and its generic things like "mood disorders". If you write yes to anything they usually ask for a GP letter which puts everything down. It might be helpful to get the private notes 'added' onto your GP notes.

Thanks Sophia, I think I might ask my GP and see what she thinks.
When I last saw occupational health, they asked me for a diagnosis and that's what I was thinking of really. I wouldn't know what to say!

Thank you Wellingtons :)

I would just tell them what your most up to date diagnosis is.

YAY for being discharged!

I think I will.

Thanks Ames :)

Got to tell my mum tomorrow. I don't think it's going to go down well

Why do you think your mum will not take it very well?

But congrats! =)

Thank you Katie :)

Connie, I think she'll be very worried. I mentioned it to my CPN and she said it's likely that she will be apprehensive because mental health teams have always been there, since I was 12 years old and I have never been without them and spent a very long time in hospital. So I think my mum will be worried about me more. I can't be under MH teams forever though! It had to end at some point!

Thanks :)

I can see the reason why she may be worried. Maybe you could sit down with her and agree a point that you would agree to seek help again?

(Sorry for my not making much sense, the lesson plans are ruining my mind.)

haha! don't worry, you make perfect sense!

We discussed what I would do in a crisis quite thoroughly today, they gave me a leaflet for a Mind centre near me, I told them I went to see the Samaritans the other week (they didn't know that you could actually go and see them, despite the Samaritans building being literally 2 minutes away from the CMHT building!) I said that I had a good relationship with my GP and she is very good with mental health so she could always refer me back or I could refer myself back if I felt I needed to.
So there are a lot of options there!

I'm seeing my mum tomorrow, so I think I'll tell her then. :ermm:

I'm glad you got what you wanted! I think it would be good to get your notes from the private psych put onto your GP notes so everything is up to date, and in future when asked about your diagnosis give the most recent one- Cyclothymia.

It's encouraging to hear you've thought about what you'll do in a crisis.

Thanks Sarah :)

I told my mum today and she actually wasn't too bad about it. She said that she felt safer when the MH team were there, like a safety net type thing but accepted that they can't be there forever and they wouldn't have discharged me if they didn't think I was ok. (Although kind of left out the self discharge thing) :p

I thought I'd feel different after being discharged. I thought I'd be all 'omg I can't cope on my own what do I do?!' But nope!

Is there not a working diagnosis on your discharge letter?
If not you could always call your (now old) CMHT and ask what diagnosis they had for you.
You will have to go with the CMHT diagnosis because that's where occy health and your gp will get there information from.

Also well done on being discharged that's great news x

I don't have a discharge letter yet and it was never fully discussed with the CMHT because I only told them about it at the discharge meeting yesterday.

If I get a letter through from the private psych I saw, I might run it by my GP or just ask her what she thinks I should do.

Thank you :)
