just got a message that my pic i posted recently in "what have you bought recently" was deleted cause the thread is always active.... the picture in question was a glock 21 45 acp handgun.. i posted a pic in the same thread a month ago showing a rifle and some shotguns yet nothing happened to that one... is it cause my handgun is black? its a hand gun?
i have read the rules and dont see anything it violates it wasnt racist, it aint a SI tool, it wasnt condoning illegal activity (im 22), it wasnt triggering and it wasnt a scar or self harm pic i wasnt forcing a political view on anyone

You can read more about the decision here (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/announcement.php?f=47)
It's a recent decision, which would explain why your previous jpg wasn't removed.

Firstly, you should contact the mods regarding this, not make a thread as discussing moderator action is frowned upon.
Secondly, the rule is here (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/announcement.php?f=47).

Hey there,
While your gun was cool, the moderators did some talking and we decided that maybe allowing pictures of guns wasn't a great idea on here. We're including that under the umbrella rule of no SI tools.
There's an announcement here. (http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum/announcement.php?f=47)
I hope it clarifies things.

But you don't have to be rude about it, to members of moderators.
Guns are a controversial hobby and there are plenty of other boards yo can post about guns on, RYL isn't one of them - especially with the demographic on here. Baring in mind gun laws are different between states and countries.

In an ideal world, there would be no rules, but there has to be some sort of regulation to allow everyone to get the best experience they can out of RYL. Don't quote me on this, but I *imagine* some talk of the use of guns in a legal manner may not be against the rules, but in the interest of continuity, actual jpgs of guns are banned.

Bingo.
The logic is very simple.
Pictures of tools for self harm are not allowed.
A gun can be used as a tool for self harm (i.e. suicide) in the same way razors can, though both are legal.
Therefore, pictures of guns are not allowed.

Looks like rules need rewriting. In General forum the guidelines say not to post asking about tattoos but many people do. Now if its not permissible to complain about anything anywhere ever that then all these things should be clarified by someone in charge. Right now it looks like nothing is reliably articulated and people.

what if i did an awesome craft project and everyone was like 'omg how did you fo that.. we want images and step by step instructions' ... what if one image had a pair of scissors in? what if i had taken a picture of somethig i had drawn and you could see my pencil sharpener in the background?
by rights those pictures should be removed no? all seems a bit OTT to me, and im sure people are far more likely to have access to the two things ive mentioned rather than a gun.

like, loads of things can be used as self harm...
A blade or something, fair enough (although learning to deal with images of sharp things would be advisable as they are everywhere in life) but scissors. What about candles, cigarettes, belts, dressing gown ties etc etc etc. A tools of suicide or self harm.

I think if we could be adults and discuss things without flaming, discussing moderator action would be a good thing because it helps make the community more cohesive.

Or at the very least, the rules should be publicly changed so that people don't get infraction points for doing things that are explicitly mentioned in the rules as legit things to do. That to me seems a little unfair and really very confusing!

This thread would of ended perfectly well I feel, had the OP not been told he wasn't allowed to talk about it.
I don't understand. If the mods do legit things and make legit rules and decision, then they have nothing to worry about, and in fact have great respect to be gained from allowing their decisions to be discussed publicly, and if people are not told that they have to sit down and know their place, then they're not likely to get angry and start flaming.

i wonder how many people that are going to get triggered by images have hurt themselves with scissors compared to those that have hurt themselves with guns.
i remember when i self harmed a lot, people could probably have talked about shootings etc etc all day long and i wouldnt blink, but people talking about shaving their legs would automatically make me think of cutting myself.

I honestly think it's legit. It's not a great inconvenience to not post jpgs of guns or blades and I think it can be agreed that it is something that would be deemed 'triggering' by a lot of members.

yes it would be getting around the law but it would be legal since they were bought pre ban...
example say a make up you owned was gonna be pulled from store shelves and banned and would never be sold again. if you truly loved this make up you probally would stock up on this make up before ban which means it wouldnt have been illegal when you bought it tho you knew after a certain day it would be illegal to sell or purchase

Okay. Earlier in the thread he mentioned a grandfather clause, I'm not sure if they are unique to the US or not but I think they may be, in a such case it is understandable that you may be misinformed. In virtually all of the new gun legislation on the table in the US, a grandfather clause is included. This means that the new law/s would not apply to people who were already in legal possession of certain types of firearms. This is set in place to prevent the likely reaction that would happen if the US Government attempted to take away people's guns that they had obtained legally before. You can read more about this on the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandfather_clause) or by simply searching the web. Hope that helps!
To put it more concisely, he's not breaking any existing laws and new laws put in place would not apply to any firearms that he already owns. The member in question did mention earlier in this thread that he was familiar with the federal and state laws that would apply to him.

Grandfather clauses are explicitly written into a law. They are not automatic.
Re: Grandfather laws. In the UK Pitbulls were made illegal to own in 1991. This meant that even dogs who were already owned were seized and destroyed. It didn't matter what their behaviour or history was and it was up to the owner to prove that it wasn't a banned breed.
You can however apply for your dog to be put onto the Index of Exempted Dogs but it has to be neutered, chipped, fully insured, tattoed, muzzled and on a lead in public places and kept in a secure location from which it cannot escape. Most people can't afford or can't be bothered. The major problem is that the staffordshire bull terrier can look very like a pitbull :(

I think there needs to be more clarification on what is allowed and what isn't. If there is a context clause, then state that.

You CAN be quite badly injured with them, but it's rare. I've bruised bones, bruise skin on a bi-weekly basis, and broken skin before. You can also be penetrated with them if you are really unlucky, and broken bones are a possibility. They also look just like swords, really. I doubt you'd know from a picture that it was blunt.

How often do you hear in the news about someone who has committed suicide by fencing sword, over someone who has shot themselves?
Basically, guns can be associated with suicide, fencing swords aren't. So the chance of a picture of a fencing sword triggering someone is next to none. As we know from the number of PRs we got about pictures of guns, they do trigger people.
Should people post pictures of fencing swords, and they get reported like the pictures of guns were, obviously we would discuss that. Untill that day, however.

I think the distinction makes sense now.
But again, I'd say the purpose or intent of the posted picture should be taken into consideration.
EG: A pair of scissors cutting out some fabric would be fine, but a pair of scissors pressed against someones skin would not.
A gun being used in target practice, or to look cool, would be okay to me over a picture of someone holding a gun pointed at the camera or shown in some other aggressive light.
Does that make sense? I'm not saying I disagree with the rule, just that intent would be useful to bear in mind.

Yeah that makes sense Jodie. I think guns are more comparable to razors though, any picture of a razor (not the type you shave with, the rectangular stand alone ones that have holes in the middle) would be removed. To be honest even if that razor was being used for craft I (personally, not speaking for the other mods here) would want it cropped out. It's too common a self harm tool. On this website, I think most members would automatically associate it with self harm in the first instance, then it's other uses. Scissors, I believe, would be initially associated with cutting paper/fabiric, before people thought of them in relation to self harm. (again, this is what I personally believe how most, not all, other people's thought patterns would go)
I also believe guns are more comparable to razors than scissors in the above statement. Because the majority of people on this website would probably first think of suicide, before the gun's other uses, it is dangerous. A comparable item to scissors might be rope. Rope can be sued for suicide, but because it has so many other every day uses that aren't mental health related, it is less dangerous to post on here as an image.
NB: by dangerous I mean risking member's mental distress/triggering them.
Does that make any sense? I'm not sure I explained my thought process very well. Again, to clarify, speaking for myself only here.

If the gun is visible then it will be removed.
When I see a law enforcement officer they arent armed because I live in the UK.

I live in an area where gun crime is high and I have been threatened with a gun/been in a situation where a gun has been used threateningly more than once. I wood not be happy with pictures of guns.
(I just wanted to say that it's not just suicide that guns are associated with/can cause emotional distress through if that makes sense? )

what about a axe or machette they're scary (sarcasm) and could easly offend someone from what im learning of the sheeple aroun here. or what about picture of a bow and arrow they're scary also.... or wait how about a beer, vodka, rum, whisky, scotch bottle since they can be broken and used to cause stress.... dont laugh been in bars and seen people break beer bottles on the bar and try to stake someone with it..
or how about a car since hundreds of suicides are done by carbon monoxide

There is no need for you to be rude about people. I understand that youre irritated but you being rude just devalues the point youre trying to make.

See the above post about what people initially think of when they see an item. People's first thought when they see a car, or an axe, probably wouldn't be suicide.
This has nothing to do with pictures of items being 'scary'.
Also Seppuku is very, very rare in Japan. The last recorded case was (i think) in 1970, FYI.

There is a big cultural difference between the US and the UK here, it would be wise to take that into consideration when discussing this issue as many of Uncle Buck's points make sense when you consider the context. I think he has made some valid points. My first thought when seeing a gun would not be suicide. It's a cultural difference. I'd probably think rabbit hunting.
I also find it to be a bit of an issue that rules are being based on UK culture and not taking into consideration the differences culturally that affect people in other countries.

They are not being based around UK culture. We have an American moderator on our team who is able to explain the difference in gun culture.

We take into account cultural difference with some of the rules (for example, discussing use of marijuna, legal in some american states, ilegal over here).
We have to do what is best for the majority though. If there was something in British culture that was posted about that could potentially cause harm to other members, american or not, we would also ban that. However as Liv stated, we are not basing rules on British culture, we are basing this on member safety. Surely member's safety is more important than the ability to post a picture of a gun, especially considering how many forums there are about guns out there?

no the problem is i get told i broke a rule in a pm and i went to look at the rules in the rule list at the top of the page and saw nothing that i broke since i dont see a gun as a self harm instrument specially since im sure a good portion of people here couldnt afford them or pass the application form since you have to list if you have and mental problems....
and according to people from the uk they never see a gun so how could they obtain one to use...

Actually, the PM I sent you said that you hadn't broken a rule, because the rule clarification was made after your post. Your post was removed because the thread is constantly posted on. This is policy when new rules/rule clarifications are made. Posts that are made before a new rule/rule clarifications are left, unless that thread is kept active, such as room threads, or threads like the one yours was posted on.
People can be triggered by things without having experienced them. If someone posted and image of someone jumping off a bridge, even though members may have never done that themselves, it could still be triggering.
Yes, chances are if you are in the UK you wouldn't be able to obtain a gun. However the feeling it could trigger could be acted on in other ways.

Reason: Due to the rule clarification, and the fact this thread is always active, I'm removing your post.
why do you remove something if it dont break a rule.. specially when it was like 4pages back

The moderators have decided to close this thread for a number of reasons.
1.It was going round in circles.
2.There was the beginning of a descent into flaming.
3.Moderator action was being discussed.
If anyone would like to discuss this further please feel free to email the mod at moderators@recoveryourlife.com
Thank you.
