Does anyone else struggle with major medical phobias?

I broke my arm on Thursday and it may require surgery. I can't believe this even happened. I was already struggling so much mentally and I don't feel like I can take on anymore.

I don't know, just looking for some support I guess.

*Massive hugs*.

What's scaring you most about it?

I don't have medical phobias as such, but I'm really frightened at the thought of being under general anaesthesia.

Do you think you could talk to medical professionals about any procedures you fear? That might help get some reassurance.

It might also help to seek out a hypnotherapy consultation, as I believe hypnotherapy can help with many phobias.

I deal with medical phobia...So I guess number one your not the only one!! I freak out if anyone starts talking about heart attacks or strokes or such. I also hate meeting a EMT on the road and forget going to the hospital for anything or to visit someone. I have googled time and time again for a name for it besides medical phobia and I cant find anything. Hope everything goes well, if you pray just do that alot it always helps me :)

I've also had a lot of trouble with doctors. When you have to go, try and go with someone close to you, or bring a comfort item like a stuffed animal. One of the biggest ways that helped me deal with it, was I found a doctor who was willing to work with my fears. She lets me know what she's doing before she touches me, she takes things slow, etc. Let the doctors know how you're feeling, and if they don't treat you right, seek out a new doctor. That's the best advice I can give you. Doctors are there to work for and with you, not to work on you. Hospitals are a little harder, though, because you don't see a set staff, but you can still try and coordinate things with an understanding team if you have a really good GP.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm most scared of needing surgery. And am having tons of anxiety over the possibility of needing it.

Sorry for not saying much. I've been in so much pain and haven't been at the computer much. But I do really appreciate the advice.

I had to have a cystoscopy last year and basically just burst into tears sobbing my heart out because the room was full of men and i didnt want to be awake for it, they where happy to rearrange the appointment and for me to be asleep for the procedure after they got out of my mum what was the matter with me.

Could it be worth while mentioning it to someone at the hosptial? Like when you get a pre-op assessment for it? They tend to want to work with you for these things
