I think this is the right place.
Basically I have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, will that stop me from holding any jobs in the future? I know I cant join the Army, the Navy or the RAF but is there is any other jobs that I am automatically be barred from?
Hi, I'm not sure really. I guess if you have an ideal job in mind, it doesnt matter if, for example, the army wont accept you. I "think" that it may come under the Equality Act / Disability Discrimination, so a company would make reasonable adjustments.
I had a diagnosis of bipolar a few years ago, and had a occupational health meeting with a dr. (I was working in engineering, doing CAD drawings). It was fine really -it was to mainly see what they could do to help. However, I have been revoked from driving because of a psychosis diagnosis. So I had to send back my liscence and can get it back after being 3 month complient with meds, no side effects and no symptoms. (Unlikely to happen).
The only other thing I can think of is CRB checks, like working with children or vunerable adults etc.
Sorry for crap reply
Take care x

Dont worry Ami. I am not looking for a job anyway (my psych and my CPN both agree that I am currently not able to do one), it was more of a curiosity thing.
So the fact that nobody knows is not really important.
Like you because of the psychosis (actually it was done under another psych I had at the time, who thought I had schizoeffective disorder not schizophrenia) I have been banned from driving. I actually didnt send back my driving licence - the DVLA never requested it - but it may be something to do with the fact I only had a paper provisional licence (as I am a vet, photo driving licences werent around when I was 17) and it has a my parent's address on it (I never changed it when I moved out & was able to drive). Or the DVLA being rubbish. But either way, I am not going to use it, so it makes no difference. My bus pass is more useful and it does give me limited free train travel as well.
Actually, thinking about it, I suppose being banned from driving would stop you doing a job where having a full driving licence was mandatory for your job (say for example a bus driver).
Yea, that is what Im worried about. Because a lot of graduate job would like a full drivers license, and as I'm at uni, it makes me feel like it's a waste of time. But I guess I'll worry about that later. I just need some form of structure in my day, for now.
I have a bus pass too and although I was upset for ages about about sending my licence back, the bus pass is rather useful.
I dont think that an employer can decide to not give you an interview on the grounds of disability/illness.
The new provisions aim to ensure that disabled
applicants are given the opportunity to have their
ability to do the job in question properly assessed.
They also aim to ensure that disabled people are
not discouraged from applying for work because
they will be asked questions about their health and
disability on application forms.
Here is a PDF about the Equality Act 2010 that is specific to disability and recruitment, from the government. Might be of some interest.

Job centres might also be helpful with this kind of information.
