Hey everyone.
I just wanted to post about my experience last night - I've been on Fluoxitine 20mg for a few days.

I went out for a meal last night and really enjoyed myself and it wasn't long before the wine was flowing and we were all a little bit tipsy.

I can usually hold my drink fairly well (let's say - I've never had any really bad drunken mishaps). Last night though I drunk what I normally might when out having a good time, but I was effected as though I had drunk twice as much.
I fell asleep (read: passed out) in my boyfriend's car and the next thing I know he and our friends were carrying me inside, I was having a panic attack because I thought I couldn't use my legs (because I didn't realise I was as intoxicated as I was), and an ambulance was being called.

I'm okay now and in the cold light of day it's obvious that the Fluoxitine simply impacted on my constitution for alcohol, so I got twice as drunk, on half the wine, in half the time.
It doesn't effect everyone this way - some people say they experience nothing when they drink on it - but I just wanted to put this out there and caution people.

I was lucky enough to be with very good friends who got me home to my family...so just be careful.

Yeah...I mean Im not saying everyone will have the same experience. I just wanted to let people know that I did and that they should just err on the side of caution when starting new medication or drinking on it for the first time.
Be safe, kids =]

It is advised that no alcohol should be consumed when taking any psychiatric medication.

Alcohol tends to counter the effects of antidepressants also.

Sorry to hear you had to find out that way.

As control freak and others have said - It is generally advised not to drink alcohol on psychiatric medications, partly as the alcohol can affect people a lot quicker but also because it can reduce the anti-depressant effect of the medication. I know that even with one glass of wine and without being drunk or tipsy, my depression can become a lot worse over the next couple of days because of this.

Do keep an eye on yourself and let your familly and friends know to do so - Especially if you have had something to drink while on ADs.

Personally flueoxtine has never interacted with alcohol for me, neither did citalopram (but it made me bf very ill if he took that and had wine). The only med that had that effect was trazadone.

always best to exercise caution though whatever you're on

I have learnt, through many years, that, sadly, it's best for me not to drink at all. It messes with my meds, I get really wierd & drunk far more easily, and the anxiety it triggers is unbearable.

Eg, I got drunk on Sunday. I am still having major panic attacks a week on and had a 9 hour one on Monday!

So yes, unfortunately, much easier to just avoid

You shouldn't drink at all on meds, it says it on all leaflets you get with meds, doctors should make it clear i think otherwise as you said effects can be bad if you don't know!
