is there a way to get a link in the new subscribed thread part of the control panel for this instead of going to the first page and then clicking the link? not a big deal, i'm just lazy.

There should be a yellow down arrow to the left of the thread title in your subscribed threads area if there's a new post. Click that, and it should take you to where you want to go.
