View Full Version : Moved thread trails?

I thought that this was something that had been ironed out quite early on, so that when you move a thread, the trail disappears?

However, I've noticed that - in general chat especially - the trails don't automatically disappear - an example of that being:

Are we supposed to be able to see the trails?

Yes, I too have been seeing those all over the place. I used to see them with deleted threads and even deleted posts, but I think that those two have been sorted out, right? There are a few of them in SI discussion as well.

Yes, in most cases a trail wll be left. Sometimes when a moderator moves a post from one forum to another, they will leave an 'expiring redirect' for a post, which will leave it "soft" in the original forum, but will still be moved to the desired forum [in the above cases, General Support & Advice].

They [the examples above] stay there for only a short amount of time, but it can save confusion if you've posted a reply in the thread and suddenly you can't find it - you can follow the redirect and see where it went.

They will, however, automatically disappear after a desired amount of time. To be honest there are probably more reasons but I can't quite think of them heh!

Hope that helps =)

Aimee, you're a star.

What confused me was that I knew that we had worked a way so that the trails wouldn't permanently stay there - which is exactly what you explained, about the trails being saved for a short length of time - but it confused me when I'd seen them a few times, especially remembering having a discussion about whether we could see them in various forums!

Thank you, Aimee.

Jo, as far as I remember we ironed out the fact normal members could see their replies after they had soft deleted them, and that was messing up the tidy forums. It was certainly those that I had members checking across forums for (that might also have just been a staff thing anyway)

What we do now for threads with only a few replies we move with no link left. We do this many, many times all day long and those obviously don't show up.

Every now and again, we feel that a thread being moved will cause people to wonder where it is. The thread starter always gets an auto PM so they are okay, but to avoid other members posting "Where is thread X gone?" we tend to leave short term redirects, almost always only for an hour.

The plan is of course that they are usful, but if they annoy people we can review them?

Hope that helps :)

Ah yes, I remember now!
Is it a manual trail left, then? As in, do you have to manually select whether or not to leave a trail?

Speaking for myself, it doesn't annoy me at all, as there just aren't enough to be annoying. If it was every moved post that these showed up with, that could get rather annoying, but as it is, it's good - my question was mere curiosity more than anything else.
Thanks, Harley.

Yes Jo, we can select whether or not to set one, and how long it lasts.
