Safe - How to tell if my hand is broken or just strained?

This isn't SI related - I actually fell on the ice yesterday and landed on my right hand. Basically, instead of having my palm hit the ground it was the top of my hand... Ouch. So, I woke up to it being very swollen though I iced it before bed. I've been icing it throughout the day as well...

My symptoms are pain, bruising on my palm and top of the hand, as well as limited motion in my fingers. I can move them, but it hurts to grasp something (writing is hard, but obviously I can type just fine.) I've also been manually moving my fingers hoping that will help ease the stiffness in my hand...

*shrug* I looked up some stuff online, and syptoms for a strain and fracture are pretty similar. I suppose a could wait a couple of days to see if it improves, but I sure as hell hope it's not broken...I think my insurance just ran out (not sure on that though).

Sorry this was so long, and thanks for the advice in advance.

Try putting some ice (with a damp towel between it and the ice)on it for 10mins every hour and keep a bandage on it. Check whether your insurance has run out. If it has then maybe wait a couple of days and see if it improves. If it hasn't then get it checked out ASAP at a hospital. In the meantime, if you're not getting it checked out straight away then take Ibuprofen (Motril/ Advil in the US)/ Paracetamol (Acetaminophen; Tylenol in the US) and that should help but definately keep it bandaged and as still as possible. Without seeing it and even Xraying it it is impossible to tell if it is broken. You might want to read the breaks/ fractures article.

I injured my arm almost 2 years ago. We were certain almost straight after when we looked at it that it was broken and it felt broken. Went to hospital and it turned out not to have a crack(well on the view of it they looked at) but I had done other damage that will now never heal so yeh, without getting it checked out you won't know.

And symptoms don't always mean anything. I know someone that went to her doctors because she was having only a slight bit of pain from her arm from an accident 2 weeks ago (it had mildly ached throughout the time and she ended up having Xrays and being told it was broken even though she could move it fine and there was very minimal swelling.

Oh yeah, and if you leave a strain it basically leads to uneven pulling on your bones which can cause a break

Good News!

Just thought I'd share, but me being the anxious person that I am decided to go to my University's Health Services (it was free!) because my hand felt worse after work. (I work in an office and type all day...) Turns out nothing is broken, and I just have really bad bruising. The doctor said that that's why it's difficult for me to make a fist and such. He recommended an ace bandage, ice, and in a couple of days low heat and stretching/moving my hand.

*breathes big sigh of relief*

I'm an art student, so if I didn't have use of my right hand for X amount of months, I'd basically have to take a semester off...

Ironically, I almost fell again on the way to the health center. Damn you, Midwest!
