Mental illness as a disability

I'm just writing an essay and I though this may be of interest to you, its taken from the DfES booklet called 'Special Educational Needs Code of Practice' (2001, pg 7):

Definitions in the Children Act 1989 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995

A child is disabled if he is blind, deaf or dumb or suffers from a mental
disorder of any kind or is substantially and permanently handicapped by
illness, injury or congenital deformity or such other disability as may be
prescribed.
Section 17 (11), Children Act 1989

A person has a disability for the purposes of this Act if he has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his ability to carry out normal day-to day activities.
Section 1(1), Disability Discrimination Act 1995

I think it's interesting xxx

Yup and that's why you can't be refused a job if you have a mental illness, it's against the descrimination disability act. Unless you're talking about working with children or vulnerable adults, then it's a whole different ballgame.

DirectGov has some good info, and updated.

I get adjustments at work because my illnesses come under the DDA.

My essay is about inclusion of children with special educational needs and disabilities in primary schools. I'm focusing on hearing impairment. :) xxx

Aye, which is how I claim Disability Living Allowance.

The DDA and actually getting a job is a whole different kettle of hippos though.
