Adult Chatroom?

Is there a way there could be an adults or veterans chatroom? Don't get me wrong, I've no problem discussing mature topics, I'd just prefer it to be with people who are legal lol.

There used to be one, but I think it ended up collapsing due to lack of use. Sorry!

Plus, with all due respect, I think there aren't that many issues that would require an adult-only room. I can completely understand wanting to talk about things with somebody else who could understand them, but I don't know if that warrants it's own room - and you will probably find people in the chatrooms who are 18+ or who can relate, too.

That is a shame.

I didn't mean thing I want to discuss necessarily, a few times things have been said and it has turned out there are quite young children in the room. Of course if they were my children I would be supervising their internet use, but it still makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Yes I have met plenty of people who understand are very kind in the chatrooms :)

Just because someone may be under a certain age doesnt mean they are going through topics which you deem unsuitable for them. There was a 'vets chat' a few years ago, it was used for a short amount of time with a small number of members, i think the novelty wore off. Chat may seem full of teenagers at times but this isnt always the case.

Hi Jane

Teenagers aren't necessarily a problem anyway in my (short) experience, some have been through more in their lifetimes than others will ever imagine.

However, others are still very young mentally, and inexperienced. I know its impossible to seperate the two etc, but actually its illegal to have sexually explicit conversations with people under a certain age (I think in the UK it is 16) regardless of their previous sexual experiences.

I guess that is my concern. I'm not saying an adult room would fix that of course, and I wasn't aware there used to be one which wasn't used, so I guess that's not really an answer in any case... thanks for the replies :)

Conversations that are perhaps inappropriate for <18s probably aren't appropriate for RYL though - I mean (and I know you're just using this as an example) sexually graphic conversations aren't allowed, nor are conversations glamorising drug/alcohol use - I do understand what you're saying, but I just wonder what sort of RYL-appropriate conversation would actually need an adult-only room.

Sorry, that's just my thoughts. But yeah, glad you've got your answer :)

Hmm there is an awful lot of very explicit sexual conversation in the rooms, whether its allowed or not, and a lot of it is in good fun.

I'm not easily offended, perhaps its just an issue of keeping the rules which already exist, I don't know. You are probably right- if there was no explicit conversations a room wouldn't really be necessary :)

Ah hello again old thread.

Ahhh the annual can we have an adult chatroom thread. As Jo said it was tried in the past and failed miserably.

You see it cant and will never work on this site.

The first room set up was for Vets and older members because they (we) didnt feel comfy with going into chat. Sadly the Vet chat got trolled from the start and scared us all away. lol.

You simply cant segrogate cus well it just wont be filled with people your own age for a start and those who dont go will feel segregated and then they get pissed and start all the QQ.

The other reason is that as soon as you mention "adult" people get pissy and defensive!! The fact that Being late 20's or 30's or 40's and so on can be as different as boys from girls get totally missed and seen as a snub on the maturity of the young adults. Then there is a huge debate about what being adult is, what being mature is and it all gets nasty and messy and we all get pissed off and the divide widens. :)

There is no questioning that some of the kids on this site have maturity well and above their years. Its quite astonishing. There is no questioning that they too can relate to most stuff also.

There is also the fact that there are MANY people who qualify to be in vets who never use the place. They prefer the other boards. It is perhaps fair to say that these people would probably also prefer to use the standard boards.

Now i havent written this to make you feel silly or to pour crap on your suggestion. Im just speaking from experience. I totally 100% understand why you want it. I totally understand the need to be with people of a similar age. However, we gotta accept that chat is for all and should stay that way. If you like it then great and if not then just dont use it :P

I have some good friends who use it a lot but i still choose to keep out cus its just not my thing.

I think its a great idea, no offense to the younger members but a few are the ages of my nieces and i wouldnt want them hearing some of the things that are said in chat. I understand that a lot have been through things, and know about sex and other things before they really should, but I dont feel comfortable talking about some issues while they are in the room, just because they know about things doesnt mean they should hear about them all the time. but seems like it wouldnt get off the ground, just wanted you to know i agree hun. tc x

Been there, tried it, got the t-shirt and burnt it. It is a good idea in theory and when we had separate rooms that didn't have a specific criteria (We have completely general, mostly general, mostly serious and completely serious now) it fitted in better having a "veteran chat room" but now it would seem like a bit of an odd body in there. We've tried it all ways before but none of them have stuck, there has either been a lack of interest, too much interest for younger members and at one point we even had it on a password lock but pretty soon EVERYBODY knew the password and then it just kinda died.

I think it's important that if people want change they are specific about what changes they would like and we will try to accomodate it. I know that there are a fair few members 20+ that already use chat. It's not that scary :P
