Sedating meds.

People's experiences of good sedating meds? Something knocks you out without making you feel bad the next day? I've been on normal sleeping tablets and they just keep me more awake and make me want to SH. I'm sick of my sleep being so out of control.

Thanks, x

Mirtazapine has been good for me.
But there can be some sedation the next day.

I've taken ativan for anxiety which I find makes me quite drowsy. But I found it lasts quite long (drowsiness wise), about 12 hours.

If its just for sleep, have you tried melatonin? I believe that is a natural chemical your body produces which you can take more of. I don't know a lot about it but I know 2 people who had major sleep issues who use it and find it very effective.

There's a few sedative meds out there which might help

Seroquel (Anti-psychotic)
Olanzapine (Zyprexa) (Anti-psychotic)
Risperdal (Risperdone) (Anti-psychotic)

The anti-psychotic ones might wear off a bit, in terms of making u drowsy and getting to bed, but for me, it's been rather consistent in allowing me to get to bed

Mirtazpine (Avanza) (Anti-depressant)
^as Above

But yah, each meds differs slightly and it's really up to the doc to determine which may be beneficial for u, in terms of sleep and other symptoms u might be having too.

Hope that helps a tad

was going to say seroquel/quetiapine - it knocks me out at night but I feel okay the next day too :)

I'm pretty resistant to sedation, Trazadone was the only thing that knocked me out (when I took it with seroquel) Traz is very good for sending you to sleep!

I've also found Trazodone to be really effective. I generally sleep all night long on it, as opposed to getting 2 - 4 hours broken sleep with "sleeping pills". Luckily I don't feel zonked the next day either, tis good stuff!

Anyway, I hope you get something sorted. Insomnia sucks, big style.

Mirtazapine and olanzapine made me very drowsy the next day, but trazodone is fine.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I've just been to the doctor and she gave me something called 'Hydroxyzine' which seems like a bit of a cop out to be honest but I'll see how it goes. If not I'll go back to suggestion some of your stuff.

Apparently its for axiety and eczema (both things I was at the doctors for anyway) but has a side affect of sedation. I think it's just and anti histamine

Anyway, see if I get any sleep tonight. I like the sound of Trazodone.

Well they arnt going to give you half of the meds suggested here as they are used to treat things and not necessary for sleep, but good luck

I have loads of other problems anyway so I can just do my research and make sure I'm covered by them.

Anti histamines are really good for sleep actually.

If what you are on doesnt work then ask your pharmacist about promethazine/phenergan. You can buy it over the counter. It helps with anxiety too.

Trazadone worked for me (till it sent me hyper), Seroquel worked at first but despite having my dosage increased (400mg) its not helping me sleep anymore.
