giving blood

I cut for the first time in a while last nite after having my phone and camera nicked, i was in an absolute state and the only thing that could make me feel better was to hurt myself. but the thing is im going to give blood tomorrow and now ive got cuts on my arm which im not going to be able to hide because theyre too fresh for make up and i dont have any bracelets at uni coz i took them all home last week
anyway i was just wondering anyone knows if they'll care when the see them, and if they wont let me give blood because of it?

thanks guys
nik

You have to wait a year before giving blood.

what do you mean you have to wait a year to give blood? You have to be SI free? Can't you wear bracelets and ask them to take blood from your other arm (make up some excuse) so it wont be in their focus? *sorry not much help!

I think it's to do with infections and stuff. It would be same for anyone who has cut themseleves even if it wasn't self inflicted...

I never heard that you had to wait a year after SI. I know you have to wait a certain amt of time after you get a tattoo, piercing, etc., but not if you get a cut. I could be wrong -- why don't you call your local blood bank and ask what the policy is? You don't have to tell them any details, they don't need to know it is you. Good luck!

Yeah, I've never heard that you have to wait a whole year after an injury to donate. If it is infected, it will show in a matter of days. I know tattoos and piercings require time, but not cuts. I'm a regular blood donor, and they know I cut, but haven't ever told me I couldn't. They may ask if there's a possibility of infection, but that's all.

Some ideas if you don't have anything to wear over them, is to wear a loose long sleeved shirt, and then when they ask you which arm you prefer, give them the opposite arm. Also, if it's not being done for some type of bloodwork or drug test, you can always call and cancel until you feel comfortable going.

I'm not from the UK, but this past fall I gave blood a day or two within cutting. The cuts were really obvious, and I could tell by the look on the nurse's face that she knew what they were. She asked for my other arm and saw more cuts there, but she still took my blood. They probably base it on whether or not the cuts look infected or whatever.

That doesn't seem right. I give platelets all the time, which is like giving blood, and they know I hurt myself but they still let me so long as I'm not infected and the wounds are of a certain type.

Weird.

Don't take it personally, not having prominent veins only means that they had too much difficulty locating them. Mine are sometimes hard to find, so they poke around until they find it. I guess it's all in who does it. My brother has great veins which show very well, but he has Aichmophobia, a fear of needles.
