Dive Therapy - Calming Down Quickly

I'm sure people will probably have heard of this but thought I'd share in case not. One of the guys on my local crisis team is always suggesting dive therapy for quickly easing distress. It's basically putting your face in cold water. I actually haven't tried it because it's not what I think of when I get distressed but it's meant to be useful. It's also supposed to help with sleep.

There is a good video about it here (link).

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Don't try to calm the storm, calm yourself, the storm will pass.

You didn't come this far just to come this far.

I am currently:

I'd have thought it would wake you up rather than helping you sleep?

Is the water supposed to be really cold to give you a jolt? It doesn't sound like somethng I'd want to do either but you never know what might work until you try, I suppose!

I think you maybe do it a couple of hours before you go to bed if you want it to help with sleep.

I can't remember exactly how it works, the video does explain but I know it's quite long.

Oooh I hadn't heard of it exactly, I remember seeing it on TV ages ago where a woman with an anxiety disorder was prescribed to go into very cold water and I think it helped her. I would be tempted to try it, thank you for sharing, I didn't know you could do it by putting just your face in.

It's basically the TIP skill from DBT, as the video says. You can do other things too if cold isn't your thing. I know there's things like holding ice or frozen oranges as well.

Please do not give me virtual hugs unless you are only using the hug function on threads. Thanks.

You can't always keep it separate.
This is happening, this is part of you.
