Laxatives

Is it a problem to take them regularly or take more than it says? If so why? Excuse the ignorance. I've been taking them a lot recently and aside from them being really painful, its not that bad...is it?

It most definitely is a problem to take laxatives regularly. Your body will build up a tolerance and after a while, you'll find that you can't go to the toilet without them. If I don't use laxatives, I'm often unable to go to the toilet for over a week, and I'm not even taking that many. Aside from that, they cause electrolyte imbalances, which can be very serious. I often feel confused and my memory has gone to **** due to laxative abuse and purging, and I get cramps and pins and needles. As well as potentially life-threatening side effects, laxatives are a pretty useless way of getting rid of calories.

Yes, it is certainly a problem. For one thing, the recommended laxative use is for people who have bowel problems. If you are using them for weight loss then you're already doing damage to your bowel linings because you don't really need them, and, they don't cause weight loss either.

Basically, it is an extremely dangerous practice.

Check out these pages about the dangers of laxative abuse if you're convinced:

http://www.bulimiahelp.org/book/laxa...laxative-abuse

http://www.choosehelp.com/eating-dis...esnt-work.html

I used to use laxatives but am trying to cut back because, I don't want to do permanent damage to something as important as my digestive system and bowels. Please seek help for this, as soon as possible. Every time you use them you risk doing more damage.

One of those pages also links to this: How can I stop abusing laxatives? Might be worth checking out.
Take care xx

I would highly reccomend you reduce them and use them only when you really NEED them, like when your truely constipated.
It is so hard to stop but it is for the best or your body may get too used to them or damaged. I can barely go without using them now and the pain I get almost daily on days I don't take them is just beyond painful. I'm doubled over.

Please try and reduce them and stop them as best you can.

Thank you.

My eating is a bit out of control right now but I know I need to stop.
