One thing my GP recommended to me is milkshakes. I've never made a milkshake in my life, so bear with me...!
Most of the recipes I can find on the internet seem to ask for ice cream. I would prefer not to include that [partly because there's no room in our communal freezers!]. I also don't have the brain power right now to trawl through internet recipe land.
How can I make one with just milk? [Goat's milk, or lactofree or soya - anyone know which kind would be best?]
Blender. I don't yet own a blender. The best kind for a milkshake has a jug, right? Or can I use a hand blender in a mixing bowl? Best place for cheap jug blenders? Argos have them for about £15. Has anyone seen them anywhere cheaper? Edit - I just saw one for £10!
I want to make fruit milkshakes - blueberry, raspberry etc, using fresh fruit. And maybe bung in some chocolate chips from time to time!
For smoothies (when at me mams to steal her snazzy blender) I always start with a banana as it add 'substance', then add whatever fruit is knocking about, a splodge of milk and some nuts and seeds.
Nuts and seeds contain healthy fats and vitamins- what you use is up to you- a cheats way to do it is to use the butter version- like cashew butter, hazelnut butter but this often has a stronger flavour.
For milk, a lot depends on how thick you like it- I dont like milk much so mines like an inch in the bottom and you have to eat my smoothie with a spoon. As for whats best (if Im right in thinking) this is for weight gain in your circumstance then use the one with the highest fat and nutritional value.
Sneaky ways to sweeten it and add extra calories come in the form of adding honey, syrups or things like dessicated coconut.
Either blender will work but a jug blender is easier and you can make more and put it in the fridge for a day or too.
Greek yoghurt is a good base for smoothies. I'm not sure yoghurt is ok for you with dairy sensitivities but some people do find yoghurt ok even if milk isn't as the bacteria have broken down some of the lactose.
You can also make fruit smoothies without any milk at all using something like orange juice or apple juice and fruit, but these won't be as high calorie. And not going to include protein.
1 banana
About half a cup frozen berries, or whatever fruit you want
About 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt
Enough milk for the right consistency, about a third of a cup.
And blend in a normal blender, I think you definitely need a blender, it would be pretty hard to get it the right consistency by hand.
I don't taste the banana, but it gives the bulk and consistency and it's a good way to use up the ones that are going brown (and therefore I can't eat).
Even as the stone of the fruit must break
that its heart may stand in the sun,
so must you know pain.
There are only two ways in which one can live their life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is.
Looks delicious! Definitely recommend honey as its yummy in milkshake. Shame you can't get one of those small fridges that yo can keep in your room. I used to have one and they're fab.
