It has come to my attention that a number of us are afflicted with the debilitating burden of being grammatically aware in the midst of bad grammar all around us.

I hope this thread will be a safe haven full of correct grammar, where all grammar Nazis can come to take a break from the world of bad grammar.

Enjoy!

Can I try and defend myself and my bad grammar?

Mike, I can let you in sometimes, if you promise to triple-check your sentences for spelling and grammar mistakes. You are doing quite well so far!

Michael, perhaps we can post a "Grammar Tip of the Day" to help you establish a better sense of grammatical correctness.

But no, we will not tolerate bad grammar, or defence of bad grammar.

The thing is, I really do try my very best to get it right! I just fail a lot with it.

I can't wait to point out all the grammar mistakes I see and then point back to this thread.

Anna, I am glad you approve! I will go search for today's tip. Unless you can think of a good one.

Fantastic timing! I've just sat down to write the Advanced Grammar Test for the school where I work. I shall procrastinate and hang around here for a bit instead.

I think I need a cuddle from a fellow grammar Nazi, as well as some tea.

Attention! Today's grammar lesson will be "Appropriate Use of the Apostrophe."

Rule #1: Use the apostrophe with contractions. The apostrophe is always placed at the spot where the letter(s) has been removed.
Example: I simply can't stand improper use of the apostrophe.
Rule #2: Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before the s to show singular possession.
Example: Anna's grammar is impeccable.
Note: Although names ending in s or an s sound are not required to have the second s added in possessive form, it is acceptable.
Rule #3: To show plural possession, make the noun plural first. Then immediately use the apostrophe.
Example: The Grammar Nazis' secret hideout was filled with grammar textbooks.
Rule #4: Use the apostrophe and s after the second name only if two people possess the same item.
Example: Anna and Ilana's obsession with grammar drove the rest of RYL crazy.
Rule #5: The only time an apostrophe is used for it's is when it is a contraction for it is or it has.
Example: It's always acceptable to use the apostrophe correctly.

Thank you and have a nice day.
