Computer games = guy thing?

My flatmate got an intresting question for his essay

"The games industry is showen to be for everyone, but really its only for young males"

Which got me thinking, is computer games a guy thing?

I mean, in my course (game production), out of the 4 years i am the only girl. There are a few girls doing programming and art, but its still pretty low numbers.

The games companys are trying to aim it more to girls, with pink consels, and girly games like pets and fashion design, but hello, maybe we like blood and guts too, we want to play the shooters and adventures, rather than some girly game.

so yeah opinons?

Well, the stereotype is obvious. Games = online shiz like WoW = obssesive males.
Truth is, I know quite a few girls who play games (including myself) but I guess females are interested in different things. Girly stuff. Y'know.

I used to have games consoles and was OBSESSED with basketball games. I had this Michael Jordan game that I'd play religiously!

I love computer games and the occasional PS2 game.
However, I had to conquer my addiction before starting college, because I would have failed, truly.
I like older games though, like Arcanum, Space Quest, Heroes Of Might and Magic.

They have tried to aim the industry towards familys with the Wii and for older people with the DS such as brain training.

I have had a lot of people thinking i shouldnt be doing my course as it is "a guys thing" Which has made me more determind to prove to my classmates thats its not.

Im a games girl.
I love playing most games, except football and other sports games (What! Is the point of buying the same game every year, all they change is the outfits they wear!) I love playing Halo online with my brother and when his friends come round we play Super Smash Bros (OMG new one in the Spring!!!) RPGs are wonderful as well, magical magic :) I have to admit that Resident Evil really scares me, especially at night *shivers* Im more than up for a bit of blood and shooting though. Super Mario Galaxy tomorrow!!

I know a few girls that actually play games, including myself, none of us play the "girlie-fluffy-cute" games. I like games like resident evil, the darkness, silent hill and rpg's. As had already been said I don't think the girlie girls would even play the girlie games, maybe for a while but then stop. My cousins are prime examples of this tbh, they have DS's, Wii and xbox and the only time they get used is when I go round.

You know me, you just don't know it yet.

If the womens wish to play games with blood and guts, theres plenty out there for them to choose from, without even a mandatory "hello". Just because they haven't been specifically designed for females doesn't mean they aren't allowed to play them.

There is a more strong base of female gamers when it is online. As it is the new thing, it appeals to a wider selection of people. Also, in the younger end of the market, especially online games(from minor website based ones, to more complicated full on mmorpg's) are just about total widespread it would seem.
