I just have a quick question..
I have had "disordered eating" for over 2 years and have occasionally purged and gone through different behaviours of starvation then b/p'ing, but now I have been binging&purging regularly since about June this year (Aside from about 2 weeks)..
I have noticed my teeth have been reallly hurting & overly sensitive.
Is it possible i've already caused damage to their enamel??
I have been using mouthwash after I have purged & avoided brushing teeth straight after, is there anything else I can do?? I am trying to stop the purging but what can I do if it does happen?
Can dentists do anything once damage is done??
I'm really scared about having to see a dentist now..
I can really relate to this Katie, my teeth also became extremely sensitive after I started purging a lot. I don't know what else to suggest, but I think you can get toothpaste that helps with it? I think it has to be prescription though..hmm.
I'm sorry to say there is not much you can do to help, aside from not purging. When someone purges the stomach acid comes up with it, which erodes enamel on teeth. Many years of purging can actually erode your teeth so that they become smaller.
I'm fairly sure dentists can work wonders, but it's costly. However, if you haven't done too much damage to your teeth, which is possible, using enamel strengthening toothpaste could help! It couldn't hurt, anyway. Personally, I just have sensitive teeth naturally. I avoid sugary foods. tooth pain can be caused by cavities as well.
Hope this helped!

As an adition to the above and seeing your dentist, a good sensitive toothpaste (like the one they do the advert for whose name escapes me)rubbed directly onto the sensitive area can help lessen the associated pain.
My mam (hygienist) told me to do this when I chipped the front of my tooth off.
A dentist may be able to help and put on veneers or crowns or such but then that would depend on the state of your teeth. But as mentioned above this doesn't come cheap.
I'd suggest ringing your dentist and discussing it with them, they may also be able to suggest something that could lessen the damage that is occuring at the moment.
Take care.
You shouldn't brush or use mouthwash straight after, because that will just swirl the acid around your mouth, making things worse. Rinse with water, wait about thirty minutes or so and then brush. Wait another ten or so minutes and then use mouthwash if you want to.
You could try a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, but I'm not sure if there is any evidence to suggest these actually work. I think the active ingredient in most just stops the pain rather than fixing the problem.
I think you should go see the dentist if you are concerned. There may be a different problem there and obviously no one here can examine you or know what is going on with your teeth. They would be able to give their own expert opinion on what to do, and if necessary, what products could help.
Baking soda is the secret. After you purge rub the teeth with baking soda.It neutralizes completely the acid.
You can buy me with a coffee,I'm so cheap. Got bitten fingernails&a head full of past;Got a broken heart&your name on my cast.

Hey sweetie I don't have much to add to this thread because everyone else has already said it, but I just wanted to warn you of something that happened to me.
Last year I was purging a LOT (have stopped now though) & even though I used to try & neutralize the acid after I purged, it wasn't enough to stop them becoming sensitive. I put up with the pain for two months - NOT something I recommend you try!! - & when I finally went to the dentist, he was shocked at how bad my teeth were. Four of them had rotted completely right down to the nerves & he referred me to hospital because he didn't think he could take them out there & then. I spent another month in pain & then finally had to be put under general anesthetic & I got them removed.
That's what purging can do. Please go & see the dentist now. You don't have to tell him about the ED, he can just examine your teeth & see if you have damaged enamel etc...
I don't want the same thing that happened to me, happening to you.
xx

There's some information for you, it might help. Even if it does cost you now, I still suggest you go because you don't want to end up with needing more treatment a few months later & having to pay loads for it then. It's better just to go now & see what the problem is =] xx
