It differs from person to person but for the first year I would not be leaving it out for an extended period of time (as in more than enough to change it) as your mouth is the perfect healing environment. I would get it done after surgery or speak to your anesthetist before (if possible) because you might not have to take it out. I have never had to take mine out for surgery, just made sure that the anesthetist was comfortable with that.

I am a professional piercer of 10 years and am pleased to see some great info posted here :)
There's a lot of poorly informed people out there who think they know it all, piercing people with poor grade jewelry and telling them to clean it with bactine and put polysporin on it!
Great post :)

Thanks for posting this! Really helped start my research on piercings an gauges for when I decide if I wanna do either of them. :3 Though with gauges, I'll most likely do the smallest size, heh heh. x3

Emo do you mean your septum? If it is done in the right place the pain is minimal.

It's a needle going through you so it's going to hurt a bit.
Septum dosen't hurt too much as long as they pierce in the right spot (not through the cartalidge).
From what I can gather, it makes your eyes water alot as well.

Quite a few people here have it (not myself personally though). They are around...

Hello everyone,
I had my nose pierced a week ago and today changed the straight bar to a nose screw. I know it's way early, but I kept touching the bar because I was worried it would fall out so I thought that overall I was less likely to introduce bacteria and irritate it if I just changed it to a screw.

My question is, I've read about nose screws and nose bones and L shaped ones etc and am after some opinions about which is best? The screw is a bit annoying because it irritates the hairs inside my nose.

It's an 18g.
I really want a ring in it but I can only have a stud for work.

Cheers.

I find the straight bars that have a ball on the ends very rarely fall out. And the L shaped ones also stay in well, although I found them fiddly to get in
:)

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

I find the corkscrew ones the best, I personally lose the L bars too easily

It's been pierced as 18g but I eventually want to put 20g jewellery in it. How long can you leave it before it will stay 18g size and not shrink down?
Because I don't really want to change the jewellery again before it's well healed in case I upset it and risk getting a bump etc.

I would say at least two months but then it might still shrink down if you only ever put smaller jewellery in it due to the nature of skin and how elastic it is.

It probably is slightly slanted depending on the locations of the veins and tendons and things under your tongue. I know mine is slightly. So yes, that is normal so that you don't bleed to death when it is being pierced.

No worries! But yeah, next time you have a mirror in front of you have a look and you will be able to see what I mean.
If it hurts, is red, is inflammed, is generally not healing, go back to the piercer that did it and get them to check it out.

I am covered in piercings, it's not that I have loads and loads they're just all in my face mainly. And I couldn't agree more with the advice you've given.

Thanks. Good to know my resources are still up to date!
I have many piercings too and years of getting them has led to me doing alot of research on how to care for them.
In fact, I'm thinking about doing a piercing apprenticeship at some point.

How d'ya know if a tongue piercing is fully healed? I doubt it is, had it out 7ish hrs yesterday after less than 2wks (2wks tomorrow) & it slipped back in easier than my nose which is 4yr old, had a slight layer of skin on the bottom of my tongue, no pressure needed or anything to get my bar back in, tongue seems to have stopped lymphing, hasn't swollen back up, not sore or anything. How do I know if its healed up?

Generally it takes around 6 weeks for tongue piercings to heal initially. It will be healed completely when no lymph is coming out of it at all and you can take out your tongue bar for extended periods of time (a day or so) without it even slightly closing.
Your mouth is the perfect healing environment though so you shouldn't really leave it out for more than 12 hours or so if you want to be able to put it back in again.
Obviousy everyone heals at different rates and stuff though.
