Wound Care - witch hazel? misconceptions?

i read in another thread that hydrogen peroxide isn't good to use on cuts. so, is witch hazel okey?
are there any more common misconceptions anyone can think of?

I will anwser your question about Witch Hazel, but I would prefer that we didn't start a list of misconceptions as it could turn into tip sharing.

Witch Hazel is not approved to go inside of a wound. It shouldn't be used on broken skin or inside of a laceration or abrasion. On intact skin it has some beneficial effect of limiting bruising if applied immediately after an injury or on itchy or dry skin.

It is impossible to buy pure witch hazel oil in todays market, and many of the additives that are in witch hazel oils, creams, and ointments are not safe to put on broken skin.

I always used it for bruises and it works a treat, I never use it one anything else though.

hmm good to know. thanks, i always thought it was good to put on open wounds.
and i didn't mean anything by the misconceptions. i just thought it might be good setting the record straight on some things, like the hydrogen peroxide and witch hazel. maybe i'm just in the dark but i always was told you *should* use them asap on wounds.
thanks for the info! :)

It's ok, Some of the differences have to do with changes in research. Sometimes new things are discovered and people who got their training a while ago don't hear about it as soon as the people who got their training after the new research.

I don't have any problem anwsering questions about misconceptions as they come up, but I'm afraid a list might give people too many tip sharing ideas.
