i know somebody has deffinately mentioned atleast one of these before but a beautiful mind - amazing Instinct - a terrific story about one man who becomes lost but finds himsefl with wild animals (stars anthony hopkins) The Boondock Saints - its maybe not a beautiful film due to violence, but i found it to be very uplifting that 2-3 men can change the day to day lives of an entire country.
inspirational/beautiful life is beautiful ... its italian. the director won the oscar for best director. dotn get the dubbed version cos it takes away from it, get the subtitled. an amazingly sad yet life affirming movie.

I'll repeat a few just because I agree with them!
A Beautiful Mind
Little Miss Sunshine
Garden State
Elizabethtown
Castaway
Life Is Beautiful
Planet Earth - Documentary Series - Really amazing!
Under the Tuscan Sun (chick flick)
There are others I want to add, but can't think off the top of my head - must go look at my DVD collection! :)
Leon - about the relationship between a hitman and a little girl. Elizabethtown - it's been summaried already. Music from the heart - A really loveley film about a violin teacher Cold comfort farm - only one I didn't cry at when watching. Atonement - questionable to some, but it touched me deeply. I've never cried so hard in a public place before. Whale rider - About a girl...hard to summarise, to do with old traditions that are largeley male orientated. Mirror mask - The story's pretty good, I adore the visual content, another I didn't cry at. Pan's labyrinth - creepy, gorey and dark, but none the less fantastic visual content and story...not the happiest of films, but still briliant. A spanish war film/fantasy. I was skeptical about the war filmness, not being much of a fan of those, but was blown away.
This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight
And in the spring I shed my skin
And it blows away with the changing wind
The waters turn from blue to red
As towards the sky I offer it
Agree with quite a few of the recommendations on here.
For the blokes.
Rocky - VERY inspirational. Shows the rise of someone from being a million to one to one in a million. Demostrates just what one person can do to change themselves
my whole life has been. running with the wind. and playing with the cowards. it’s so hard to see. i’m fractured within. a poet in a window. we’re bastards and thieves. we’re lovers and saints. we’re holding on to mourning. and in the shadows i will be. until the sunlight melts away. until we tire of murder...fill me up with love...say goodbye when you leave. remember to breath. remember to listen. it’s getting harder to be. the son you want of me. the son i’ll never be.
Raise your voice- I know it is a teen movie but it shows that you should believe in yourself and risk something for your dream.
I can't control my destiny.
I trust my soul. My only goal is just to be. (Rent)
I'm selfish, inpatient and a little insecure.
I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle but if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. (Marilyn Monroe)
The Science Of Sleep
Eternal Sunshine
Life Is Beautiful
Big Fish
Mirror Mask
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Whisper of the Heart
Shawshank Redemption
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
The Illusionist
A few have been mentioned, i could list a few more but the one that stand out most at the moment is 3-Iron it's so simple, yet so beautiful. I love it.
It's so easy to get lost in constantly having to present
whatever face you believe a person wants to see rather than your own
A biopic of the meteoric rise of John Forbes Nash Jr., a math prodigy able to solve problems that baffled the greatest of minds. And how he overcame years of suffering through schizophrenia to win the Nobel Prize.
hmm, if you like the colours and cinematography of Amelie, try something like Crouching Tiger hidden Dragon or Hero.
Another amusinf French film is Le Closet; it's about a guy who pretends to be gay so his firm don't fire him. It's got a really sweet, subtle sense of humour, it's very french :)
hmm, what else? Oh Volver is nice, quite a nice style to it, black comedy and sweet storyline, a little slow in places though.
That's all I can think of for now, I'll try to think of some English ones at some point(!)
