Anyone Consider Themselves A "Goth"

I was just wondering whatever happened to the "goth" scene - especially in UK since it was never that popular around my area. Around 2003-5 in RYL there used to be a lot of posts about goths and gothic style. People would argue what it meant to be a Goth. What was best goth music... goths being beaten up etc etc. Is gothic subculture kaput?

I often wondered about this and tonight I ran across an article about goths "growing up"

Growing-up for goths

You'd getter a better ratio with an answer on the poll for 'I am not a goth'.

..I feel like goths and emo got intertwined. And then there were vampires.

I don't have anything to contribute but I did enjoy seeing the grown up goths in that article.

See I was never that good at parsing through what was "authentic goth" and what was "fad goth" etc. Around New York it became mostly rap and hip hop etc. There are some goth clubs in the city and there was a Hot Topic in the mall (and some didn't consider it a goth store and others did etc) but goth never took off around here. part of the reason was Columbine because the shooters were originally mis-labeled "goths" and "goth" brand became kind of sketchy.

To me emo seemed to be missing the "edgy dark" that goth could have. I mean some goth guys liked to looks kind of low key menacing in a supernatural kind of way while emo guys seemed not very menacing at all - more needy. Heck I recall that social site Vampire Freaks and that was called "goth-industrial". I don't think there is an "emo industrial" lol. Maybe Twilight is the a bit goth in a emo way

Lol - see that's what used to go on here all the time. For someone (me) far away from anything goth (truly or not) it became hard to follow.

A lot of people here joined there and weren't goths. It was kind of a cool place before Facebook took off. It seemed to get hot along with MySpace but less so. Interesting Wiki of Vampire Freaks:

"Here" meaning RYL - first Ruin and then Recover Your Life. Threads contesting aspects of "goth" were a staple for a few of years and then pffft nothing. I haven't even seen the word "goth" in General in 4-6 years.

Oh I get what you mean.I think in a kids view, emo became the new goth. It's only when you get older that you can 'appreciate' the difference

You can tell I should be asleep! I totally knew that was its name.

My mum always insists on trying to go to Whitby that weekend and gets confused as to why we can't get into whitby at all

I had leanings that way way back when although I was always more mosher than goth. Thank beans now I'm far from either although I do still like some gothic art and music.

I liked Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and Nightwish - maybe I was touched with a bit of esprit de goth? I recall people arguing if Slipknot was goth but I never liked them (a lot of girls did though - more than guys it seemed) so I didn't follow the debate.

I seem to remember Hellfire and Almighty Bollocks Monkey going to a goth shop of some kind in RYL documentary.

I also recall a lot of talk about "chavs" beating up goths (who were called "gofic" - to make fum of them I think?). Then that topic got banned - and there was once talk about banning posting about "emos" as it was deemed unfair somehow by Typsee who had some personal angle on it I never got.

There was a lot of goth style art by members on deviant art. I had a lot of them on my account (its my second fav site) If I was 12 and my mother broke into my dA account and saw what the people I was watching posted she would get upset lol.

For better or worse I recall various RYL eras by the music going around at the time and I dont remember anything as popular (in that temporary pop way) as Evanescence. Then again the Olsens were real popular at the time too. Remember when like every thread had 3 Olsen sigs in it lol?.
