Is it something to do with the fact that people used to believe they carried the soul of the recently departed and takes it to the world of the dead?

Who wrote 'The Rape of the Lock' and what is the poem actually about? Bonus points if you can tell me why it was seen as a massive insult to someone.

Written by Alexander Pope. No bonus point for me but I would very much like to know!

What is the difference between poisonous and venomous?

There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: 'This glass is half full'. And then there are those who say: 'This glass is half empty'.
The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: 'What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!

Vajont Dam in Italy.

Alexander Pope's poem had nothing to do with Dryden and a library. When I'm online properly tonight I'll confirm the story. But I'll give you a clue, due to the topic, it is seen as a mock epic poem.

Why is it incorrect to refer to The Netherlands as Holland?

Is the Netherlands a region of low lying land, but Holland a country? No Googling there!

What's the oldest college at Cambridge University?

For you to be here now trillions of drifting atoms had somehow to assemble in an intricate and intriguingly obliging manner to create you. It's an arrangement so specialized and particular that it has never been tried before and will only exist this once. That is of course the miracle of life.

It's Peterhouse. And you are alas incorrect! The Netherlands is the name of the country and Holland is a county. It's like referring to England as Buckinghamshire!

You forgot to ask a question!

For those of you who are a bit geeky like moi and like this sort of thing, there's a free podcast from the 'QI elves' called 'No Such Thing As A Fish' which is brilliant! Very interesting and informative and funny.

Nope, but you weren't far off, it started as military training in Sweden. And you owe us all a question.

OK, Rape of the Lock story time;

It is a satire of a real life event between two aristocratic people in the early 1700's. Arabella Fermor and her suitor, Lord Petre. Petre, lusting after Arabella, had cut off a lock of her hair without permission (Which at the time was seen as sexual assault) it caused a massive rift between the families.

Now where does Pope come into this? Well, friends encouraged him to write the poem to try and calm down the situation between the families and it backfired. It caused huge offence to all involved, but was originally published anonymously.

The only answer I can find is "You’re Ugly Too” but I think that is wrong, so I won't add a question.

Hertford college. Do I get bonus points for knowing it was called Hart Hall in his day?

Do we get an answer to the film? I'd be interested to know.

Speaking of Donne, what is his poem 'The Flea' what is the speaker trying to convince someone to do?
