OK, Rape of the Lock story time;
It is a satire of a real life event between two aristocratic people in the early 1700's. Arabella Fermor and her suitor, Lord Petre. Petre, lusting after Arabella, had cut off a lock of her hair without permission (Which at the time was seen as sexual assault) it caused a massive rift between the families.
Now where does Pope come into this? Well, friends encouraged him to write the poem to try and calm down the situation between the families and it backfired. It caused huge offence to all involved, but was originally published anonymously.
