Uni Student Thread

Hello hello.

This is a thread for uni students to discuss all things uni-related (managing money, deadlines, socialising, mental health support etc.) as well as to just have a chat, relax and talk with other uni students about anything that is bothering you. Please do remember that this is the general support and advice board though, so more serious issues would be better places in a separate thread in one of the other boards.

It doesn't matter if you're not studying in the UK and distance learners (e.g. OU) are also completely welcome.

Also a thread for ex-uni students desperately clinging on to the glory days of not paying council tax and testing the human capacity for sleep. These people are an excellent source of advice, though might bicker for hours over whether or not santander is the best student account!

Oh, and one more thing! Please don't be intimidated if there are lots of posts in a short space of time- you are not obliged to keep up with it all, just jump in and say hi :)

Hi all :) im lillie.

When do you go back J? Are you doing it part tome as you'd hoped? If so I want to pick your brains for student finance.

And what does one do with ones bank account when one suspends studies? Im not a graduate or a student for a year?

I go back end of September I think.

If everything has worked out then yes. still waiting for 100% confirmation. i got confused with SF so my advisor at uni did a lot of it for me.

i think maybe ask in the bank? or leave it and pretend you're still a student :P

Hello!!

I can't wait to go back to uni after having two years off. Bit nervous about the work but I've finay made it to my final year so I'm pretty pleased about that. I've been attempting to do some reading before I go back but haven't got much done yet.

What's everyone studying? I'm doing philosophy and social policy.

Hello :)
I'm Alison. I'm not technically a uni student in that my course is only a year long, I already have a job in my chosen profession (nursery assistant) and just furthering my qualifications so I can eventually be promoted.

So yes, hi :)

Can I borrow your uni advisor J?

Yeah should probably ask in the bank but may well ignore until I have to act.

Well done Katie :) The best advice is probably just to plan time out well when it comes to workload. I'm doing Human Biology.

Hey Alison :)

Hello!

I'm one of those eternal student. I'm currently doing part way through my PhD.

Hope you get confirmation of part time study soon J, was such a relief when I finally got confirmation through of my change of study.

Asking at the bank might be a good idea, they may not be entirely helpful. I did a 4 year course but they turned my account from a student to a graduate account after 3 years but didn't change it because they gave graduate account the same privileges for the first year. They had no answer when I said that is great but I won't have them for my first actual year of being a graduate. Stupid inflexible banks. [end of rant]

When does everyone go back? The summer holidays are over here for primary school and high school kids, but college doesn't start until the 4th. I'm nervous!

I'm Ali - not going to be a student for much longer but clinging on! I'm finishing up my Foundations of Clinical Psychology MSc at Bangor - I'm back home in Bristol writing up my thesis as all of my taught modules are done with. I did my Psychology BSc at the University of Birmingham so can help with any questions about both of these universities!

I'm turning into one of those forever a student :S 4 years, now taking a year out and then another year to do my final 2 modules. Though facult still haen't confirmed the suspension and urgh.

Well its not like I need the overdraft or privileges anyhow.

4th is early! And you're bound to be a tad apprehensive but thats generally a good thing as it means that it matters to you.

Hi Ali, whats your thesis on? Hope its going well.

Hi all.

I'm doing Health Studies, on Tuesday I find out if I can return to uni this year. I'm rather nervous. Seems like I'm going to be one of these forever students as I have to retake my first year due to being in IP. Le woe. For those who don't know, I'm Mary :)

The title is 'Cognitive Reserve, Control of Age-Related Change and Depressive Cognitions in Later Life'. Basically, I'm looking at the differences in those variables in a sample of people over 65 that myself and the other students in my project group spent the year testing.

It's interesting, but I am sick of it now! I have the first 3 sections written (they need fine tuning) and the final section is still bare bones, but I'm trying not to stress too much. It's due September 15th, but I need it done a good while before then so I can get it printed/bound in time.

Mary hope you get to re-take it. I did for 'health reasons' and they didn't even charge me tuition fees.

That does sound really interesting but can sympathise with being sick of it- had that for my dissertation- actually starting resenting hands which was a bit awkward :P
Will it really take that long to get it bound and stuff? Mine took 20 minutes and that was only because my mate was a spaz and couldn't use the printer. We took it down a shop that did it all for us.

What happened to the other thread?

I start the OU very soon! I'm doing the Forensic Psychology degree, very exciting!

I've technically been a uni student since 2011. I did the first year and a half of a psychology degree in London then left, switched to criminology with social psychology at a different uni and had to leave there too. So I'm starting with the OU :) Likely I wont graduate until 2018 minimum, possibly 2020.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

Was locked due to thread starters request, not down to rule breaking which was good to know.

I've heard good things about the OU, and that you can adapt it to suit you more with health and things. Thats poorly phrased but I hope you get what I mean. You hoping to carry on with criminology? <- forget that I can't read, your degree sounds ace.

We're told it can take up to 2 days for it to be printed and bound, and I'll be submitting it for printing online rather than in person as Bangor is so far away from Bristol (5+ hours on the train just to get up there, I'd need to get a hotel etc). Don't want to go up there until I have to! The deadline is also on a Monday, which means it won't be possible to print in the 2 days before as that's the weekend. I want it done in good time so I won't be stressing about it getting printed, basically :P I'm sure it doesn't take as long as they say, but better early than late!

I have to go up on the 19th to present it in a conference, which I'm absolutely terrified about :/ Another reason I'm not going up to Bangor to get it printed, as I can't afford to stay in a hotel for longer than 1 or 2 nights :P

Ah didn't realise that Ali. And yes definitely early is better. You can get some good deals for hotels and stuff online, and brizzle is a nice city so hopefully you can get to see a bit of that with your coursemates after the presentation.
