Asus actually has the best reliability rating (including over Apple). A problem is that even good laptops have a higher repair rate than desktops over a three year ownership period. With the good brands its 1 in 7 laptops need a repair. With lesser brands its 1 in 5.
Sometimes one model is better than another. In forums dedicated to laptops they discuss the differences. One Sony laptop will come from one factory and another from another factory. One factory (and/or its manufacturing supplies such as bad chips from China) will have issues and another one won't.
I would get a desktop myself and have a laptop as a backup. If I had to have a laptop I would keep try Asus. I've built all my computers with their stuff and rarely had any issues compared to other brands
I have a desktop Jack, built it myself, however I need a laptop to take into Uni and be able to do work on, and ideally I would like it to last until I finish uni.
I am only put off Asus due to my bro and sis having them and they have fallen apart.
Never forget what you are for the rest of the world will not.
Wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you

Ah glad you have a desktop. I can't imagine being a gamer without one lol.
Here is the reliability chart from 2010 (2009 looks about the same - haven't seen one for 2011 yet):
I think most laptops are assembled by a few Taiwanese manufacturer. No matter the brand if you spend a bit more you get a metal chassis which will hold up a bit better,
I think most failures are because of who manufactured the component. I had a Lenovo laptop fail because of a bad nvidia graphics chips. Laptops from other brands using the same nvidia graphics chips also failed.
My Acer is currently functioning as an oversized paperweight and nothing else, broken beyond repair (or so I've gathered from the two unsuccessful repair jobs it's been subjected to). My Toshiba is running like a dream.
I had an Acer and an Asus laptop both were a pain in the butt. I had an aversion to Mac's too until my sister got one 4 years ago and has had no problems at all. I got a mac book pro in oct and my god was I kicking myself for forking out for 2 laptops in a four year period.
Two people to be beaten with Mac's huh. I'll copy and paste my essay about why apple sucks if you dont behave. Also most of the software I need for uni probably wouldn't work on one

Toshiba! Dont get a dell, mine fell apart within 6 months D: I mean literally too!x
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
Acer, Toshiba and Sony. I've had all three, currently got a Sony. They are all great and I've not had any problems with them. As long as you look after them, ie. get them externally cleaned a few times a year and the such like they ;ast for years.
I've got a sony atm and it is amazing, I can't fault it at all.
