Assignment/Coursework Motivation

A deadline is looming; you've collated your notes, you have the relevant texts, you have a copy of the assignment/coursework brief to hand, you've eaten/had a drink, the computer is working fine, nobody is in the house to annoy/distract you.

and yet no work is getting done!

Any tips for motivating oneself to start doing some damn work?

Dave

Well for a start get off RYL!!!
Turn your modem off and get on with it! :D
Turn EVERYTHING off unless you NEED it.
If our not ruthless at this point you shall spend the rest of the day/night dossing on the internet, or watching tv etc

You know me, you just don't know it yet.

Valid points.

There must be something hardwired into the student brain..."must procrastinate".

Don't really understand it myself but the most mundane things become fascinating as soon as an assignment presents itself.

Wait until there's nobody on MSN, no good tv shows on, and nobody's answering their phone. THAT is the time to work, my friend.

^ ditto.

Ever since gcses I've never done coursework until the night before it's due in. It's a bit rubbish when you're doing a national diploma though (t's all coursework)

This is the second day this week I'm staying up all night working :(

I suggest you just force yourself to start the work. It's not so bad once you've started and staying up all night working is horrible.

strange thoughts come into your head and you better think them.

Optimum coursework time is between the hours of 2am-5am.
At this point RYL is dead quiet, The only people left online on MSN are likely to be in the same situation as you or there's no one online at all.
Three hours is a pretty standard time to start and finish an essay with dedication.
And You can jump in bed at just gone 5am and grab 2 hours sleep before getting up at 7am.

I've done that waaaay too many times. =|

And climb high to the highest rung, to shake fists at the sky.

Ahh, but that's the downside to a global communications network... When it's 2 am here, it's 10 am in the UK and 9 pm in Australia... and when it's 2 am in London, it's 9 pm in NY, 6 pm in California, and 1 pm in Australia... So, you see the problem?

Yeah, I have quite a few highly effective methods of procrastination, but I'm not so great at the not procrastinating thing... Like right now, I have a microbiology exam tomorrow morning, and yet here I am on RYL, and I may well end up not studying for it at all tonight, despite that I seem to know remarkably little of the material.

My only advice is take multivariable calculus, cause I seem to have just the opposite problem with that class - I just spent four consecutive hours in front of my computer without eating or drinking, and I spent I don't even know how many hours on it last night and totally failed to go to bed because I really wanted to figure out that one problem. Of course, the homework for that class doesn't actually count towards my final grade, so it figures that would be the only one I have no trouble focusing on...

do some work, take a break and get up, check ryl whatever then do some more work.

Never works for me, but I'm told it helps some. I am personally the type to stay up all night writing a 7 page research paper when it is due in 12 hours.

nooooo.... don't take breaks... at least if you're like me - I can never make myself go back to my work after my "break" is over!

I am procrastinator extroadinaire so fully agree with pulling an all nighter

However should I one day not be a procrastinator I would find myself somewhere quiet where I cant be distracted by things like RYL - and start to work if I find my mind wandering eat something, go for a walk to the loo or change the subject.

Make sure if you take a break you leave your work room et voila!
