My Dad has had a Nikon D70 for a while and while he doesn't use it professioanlly, he's really particular about the camera he uses and he knows about as much about cameras as anyone else I know. He's had it for around a year and a half now and has had no problems with it at all and the pictures are very high quality.
Looking at a few places online though, I don't think you'd be able to get one for under £300
