Thank you. It went well but I did break down in tears which was very embarrassing.

I'm glad it went well. I know what you mean about being embarrassed by crying. It's natural though and I'm sure you were the only one judging yourself for your tears. Is there a plan for your treatment?

The nurse and doctor and advocate were all so supportive. They told me to stop blaming myself everyone makes mistakes and it's just about learning from them and that it's all part of my depression. They've just added back in my antidepressant and then in two weeks time they may give me planned escorted leave with member of staff I trust and get on with.

That sounds really positive, I'm so pleased for you. Are you feeling more positive about things now?

Thank you so much for your kindness and support. A bit but I'm very upset with my psychologist and I know I'm second best to her

What makes you think that?

The patient must be getting her support for a reason, I'm sure you don't know the whole background of what's going on. The psychologist is willing to support you too if you let her. She won't be making anyone 'second best' she's just doing her job the way the staff/she thinks is best.

I'm sorry you feel upset and hurt. Do be honest with the psychologist so you can have a chat about it.

That is a long time to wait. Are there other people you could talk to about things with the psychologist? Just so you can be heard, and then talk to her when she's back?

Psychologists literally don't have favorite patients. They're trained to be impartial and to provide each patient with the correct amount of support they need. It sounds like you've made a lot of progress, and the psychologist would be aware of that and address your needs accordingly. The same as with the other patient, who as per their treatment plan, likely needs the level of support they are getting.

Comparing your needs to another patient's needs doesn't make sense, given you don't know what their needs are and you are both individuals. Your needs and struggles aren't the same. I hope you can learn to focus on yourself and what you need, and less on what the other patients have or don't.

For example, when I was in inpatient and residential treatment, I didn't see the family therapist at all. Not once other than an initial meeting. Yet others saw her multiple times a week. Same with therapy. Some of us saw the psychologist two or three times a week, and others only once. It had nothing to do with them playing favorites and everything to do with basing the time and support on everyone's individual needs.

Even outpatient, I see a therapist twice a week. Others see her once a week, once every two weeks or once a month. It's individual based on patient needs. I've even asked before about favorites and time given for support. It was explained to me (by a psychologist) that psychologists are trained to be nonjudgemental and non-partial. That's part of how they are able to work with you on really tough things, and help you learn to deal with them. They have an outside, unbiased perspective and don't get quite as caught up in emotions. They have had training in separating their personal thoughts and emotions from how to behave professionally.

I'm really glad you were able to be open about things and come to the understanding that you have. Hopefully you can work with the psychologist when she's back and speak to other staff in the meantime.

I know how this ward works and I know for a fact there is favouritism going on. I also know that my needs are not being met. But thanks for sharing anyway.

If there is favoritism going on, that's inappropriate and should be reported. So I hope you can report that. A psychologist could lose their job and license for behaving in an inappropriate manner and taking favorites like what you are saying.

The best thing you can do is focus on yourself and how you can get your own needs met. Focusing on the other patients, whose treatment needs you don't know, doesn't help you.

If it will get your needs met to report the psychologist's behavior, please do.

I am addressing it with the psychologist and I have also taken it to the matron who is going to arrange a meeting with me to discuss my letter to him.

That's good. I'm glad they are going to address it. In the meantime, how can you focus on getting your own needs met, and worrying less about everyone else's?
