This thread was started about this particular race,
yes this is an American article, so i can quote from American sources because that is wear the article originated from. I know this is a uk based board but were talking about racing outside the uk too, or is that not allowed now because you live in uk, there is a thread about international users being allowed to discuss topics in forum and community questions if you care to have a look.
also does that mean you only support UK racing and not US because of the whipping regulations?
If you are supporting it on a whole than why mention different regulations?
Look at the track and what do you see – the sport of kings, or the arrogance of humans?
(source: USA today)
People hoist the trophies and make the money. Horses do most of the work, and sometimes, the dying.

My thoughts exactly.
pit bulls and Rottweilers are strong dogs but it doesn't make it right to fight them so to say horses naturally love running also doesn't mean they should be exploited and used by humans and die for it, if they naturally love it they should be left to happily do it on their own terms.
How can anyone say they love horses and do this to them.
You know whatever my opinion, whatever your opinion im just thinking about animal welfare, id love for you to prove to me they don't suffer, i really would for the horses sake but you cant. well just have to agree to disagree on this one.
I live in a relatively suburban area and lots of people around here horse ride.
I've got a few friends who's siblings/relatives of another variety are jockeys.
My friends all absolutely adore their horses.
Yes they race them and take part in dressage competitions and the like.
I know they treat their horses like they would their own child.
I have a friend who if the weather suddenly gets really bad, signs herself outta school so that she can go and put her horses in the stable.
Yes horses get injured but so do people.
I know they treat their horses like they would their own child.
were talking about a horse who has been pushed to death, do they compete in races where the horses are raced to exhaustion?? because thats what im debating which is what the original article for this thread was about.

.
im not saying they are not looked after, as you would have read in an earlier post.

?????????????????????
whats your point?? thats there decision to be in that situation.
i love horses, im not arguing against people who have horses, im arguing against the big buisness

Whoa, jeez oh! I was just making a comment on how I see things. I am from the UK so only have knowledge of the UK regulations and so base my opinions on them. If the US horse racing authorities don't want to set limits on whipping then that's their prerogative.
I was simply asking for a source which said that the horse had been whipped 'mercilessly'. It's pretty obvious that it'll be an American source since the original article was from the US.
On the whole I do support horse racing, because I don't see anything wrong with it. It would be good if there were some regulations to protect the animals but I'm sure the industry will be regulated adequately.
If you were to leave these horses to their own devices in the wild you'd no doubt find that they'd suffer an awful lot more than they currently do. There'd be no one to put them down if they get injured so would have to lie dying for hours in agonising pain; they'd probably struggle for food; they'd struggle to find land in which they'd be welcome (farmers don't take well to wild animals being on their land); and numerous other reasons.
But they want to be jockeys!
My friend who's brother is a jockey is the girl that leaves school.
And yes it's a huge business but the horses never do anything they don't wanna.
Try convincing and animal that's double your size with a bad temper to do something it doesn't wanna.
It just doesn't happen.

unfortunately thats not a guarantee though, oh and i would be good if there were regulations?? and they get to suffer if not, or untill the regulations change?

I didnt state they should be left to their own devises in the wild, i said they should be able to run naturally if thats what they like to do, yes in a nice big field being looked after, my point was that part of their personality shouldn't be exploited though.
I wouldn't think all racing needed to be stopped. Watching 20 of them fighting out of the gate though does seem like asking for trouble though - for the jockeys as well. Maybe 12-15 is enough for a big race. Most of the horses seem well out of the winning anyway.
okay so why protect animals full stop than if thats your attitude, its okay for them to die prematurely because they will one day anyway, not see the grass again live out to old age, eat their favourite food, yes what an animal lover you are.

I have never professed to being an animal lover.
I never once said any of what you are claiming either. Let's not make any laws because there's no guarantee they'll not be broken? We all know it doesn't work like that. By setting guidelines for the jockeys, or even legislation, will reduce whipping over time.
No they don't but have you ever seen a horse that doesn't want to do something? You're ****ed if you're going to 'force' an animal that size to do it. They're herd animals. They run. My horse could break her leg as easily charging off with me after other people up the woods. Accidents happen.
^Have you ever actually conversed with an elephant about whether or not it enjoys being in a circus?
I mean, I am aware that that is an awful comparison to make.
But it really pisses me off when people get really OTT about animals.
wow this is a really heated thread
*is almost scared to comment*
I'm on the fence about it really.
Whilst there are jockeys who care about their horses...there will also be jockey's driven by greed and money and status. To them the horse is just an instrument to that gain. Surely you can't deny that?
It will always be the same in any sport...by it human or animal.
