Academies I've worked with have been mixed. Some have changed for the better and some are no different. I haven't come across any that hae been worse those.

Gilesgate is become 16-19 instead of 11-19, so basically they're closing the main school and just leaving the sixth form. That part is definitely true, but I've been googling about this Academy business and not found anything at all, so either my mam's been listening to too much gossip (she's the one who told me!), or it's just not on the interwebs. I know there was talk a few years ago to merge Belmont and Gilesgate to make an academy, but I don't know if that plan was scrapped or not.

My friend is male and got told off for having hair gel in. The lady teachers have to wear skirts or dresses no trousers and they don't teach evolution. When you walk into the reception of the main Emmanuel school in Gateshead there are lots of pics of famous figures including scientists but no Darwin. Also the pupils get fined £5 for chewing gum or walking on the wrong side of the corridor. Needless to say when I taught some of their kids they went mental as when they get freedom they can't cope. Also fringes for girls aren't allowed but have to be Kirkby gripped to the side and one plain elastic bobble can be used.
It is all about funding, I think all the schools round here have changed.
From my limited not paying much attention while my parents were talking about it: If too many schools in an area change the remaining ones won't get enough funding from the LEA so have to turn into an academy too, just to secure funding.
Doesn't make much sense to me and probably wont really make much difference in over all as I don't think academies are allowed to drop the core subjects, just change what others are on offer
All the schools around here have either changed already or are changing. Some are grouping together to make big "specialist" academies and a load of them are having new stuff built or, in some cases, the entire school is being rebuilt.

Yeah, I heard they didn't teach evolution too- and my music teacher claimed he knew someone who didn't get a job there because his sample lesson included a Freddie Mercury clip and they were like to the gays.

I imagine they also take great delight in not having to teach that homophobia is not legit in PSHE.
Alot of school barely cover LGBTQ* topics in PSHE as it is anyway.
I was definitely not taught anything about not being straight, I think we had a lesson that breifly mentioned being gay and HIV/Aids but that was it.
Nothing that was of use anyway!

^Yeah, I don't remember doing anything to that effect either, but I think it's quite a recent thing- I was talking to a citizenship teacher recently, and she said it was something that is routinely covered.
I shouldnt think that a lot of that is down to children not being educated about it.

Here's where I insert a randomly boring post that my old high school switched to academy status just as I left. I think the only changes that have been made are the introduction of a few new subjects, a department being given specialist status and of course as everyone has already mentioned, the funding.
Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world awaits in darkness for the light that is you.

Really? I find that rather hard to believe as homophobic bullying is still a thing at most schools as far as I am aware...

Because sponsors have little to no idea about teacher pay schemes. Private schools do but thats slighty different in that fees cover their pay and the pay scheme in private schools is usually fairly similar whereas this can be anything.

As far as I'm aware there's just four different pay scales: England & Wales, Inner London, Outer London and 'Fringe' London. But then of course each of those is a scale, so I don't know who gets to decide where on that scale an individual's salary is. Liv, do you know? You know ALL the things about teaching!!
yep there are 4 scales. Then within that scale you start at M1 which is the lowest pay and based on the school giving you points you can move all the way to M6 on the pay scheme. Then if you get to the holy grail of being an 'excellent teacher' as deemed by the headteacher you get 'excellent teacher pay.' Which is some mythical thing that most teachers never see. Once a year the school reviews you and decides if you get to go up a level.
However now the government is going to let head teachers set the salary and scrap the 4 region pay, because schools arent enough of a political battleground as it is!
With private schools it is different because parents are paying fees. Although it is seen as likely that you will be paid more for being a teacher at an independent school it really does depend on what type, if for example you work at a private religious school your pay will be low, if you work at a well established school you will get more money. However the perks of working in a private school, if it is a boarding one which most are is that you are likely to get free housing. Therefore it may seem like these teachers are earning more money, whereas it is more likely to just be the head teacher who is earning more.

My school merged with another school that didn't get on with each other, which led, rather to the suprise of local government, to more fights between puplis as they were with each other all the time.
And about a year after the merge the old school building burnt down.
I believe this is the first year that all the pupils get on and have had no fights!
I went to such an awesome school.
Also, what is the difference between a specialist school- the ones that have the term specialist college attatched to them and an academy? anythong or nothing?

I'm not suprised. I only know of one school in York that doesn't currently have a rivalry with another and that is because it isn't near any other schools!
