I don't know what A Levels I want to take!!!!!!!!!!
I have a long list of what I'd like to do, but I can only take 4 or 5! And I have to at least have a vague idea of what I want to do next year soon!
These are the ones I want to do:
Sociology
Biology
Psychology
History
Philosophy and ethics
English literature
Law
Critical thinking
Politics
Those last two are ones Mum wants me to do.
Any advice on which ones on that list are good subjects/interesting etc would be appreciated!
Thanks :)
Izzy

do what you enjoy. dont do anything just because your mum wants you to do it. if you dont enjoy it then you will liikely hate it.
of your list im doing psychology and biology both of which are really interesting and i enjoy. it also depends on what you want to do after your a-levels.
Sociology and Psychology are quite similar. Ive taken psychology and i find it absolutely brilliant! you learn about things such as attachment, memory, stress, social influence and individual differences.
I know people who have taken history and biology - they say its quite hard, but they enjoy it. Philosophy and ethics - ha. i've taken religious studies and we've realised that our course is the same as theirs but they do a little bit more. You learn about ancient greek philosophers, and recent theories of ethics. The ethics side is actually really good, if you can live with the ancient greek stuff.
Those whom i know taking eng lit really enjoy it. Theyre reading books such as Othello, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof etc. Finally, law unfortunately i dont know anyone doing this. Not sure where you are in the uk but i know that in the midlands not many sixth form colleges have courses in law.
As for the subjects your mum wants you to do, hum, critcal thinking, we do it as an extention, optional. Debates really, not sure how much the work load is though. Politics, very different. it'll stand out on your CV.
Just remember A levels start are specific. If you have an idea of what you want to do as a career, then take subject that support that. oh but make sure youre gonna enjoy it =]
i don't know what i wanna do as a career!!!!!
i would LOVE to be a professional musician, but, because i play the FLUTE, which is such a common thing to play, it's highly unlikely i'd ever be able to do that
other than that i'm considering psychologist or maybe something to do with law...
but i think i'll definately take biology, coz taking no sciences really narrows down your career options, but biology on its own is apparently useless...
i'm so confused!!!!!!!!!
thanks for all your replies!!!

History is brilliant, absolutely loved it! But I did English Lit as well for AS, and found the two of them together quite tricky, lots of essays etc... So I would advise against doing both those two and something like Philosophy&Ethics cos that would be masses!
My other two were Physics and Maths, which I found a lot less work.
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell. I know, right now you can't tell. But stay a while and maybe then you'll see A different side of me Unwell - Matchbox 20

but i think i'll definately take biology, coz taking no sciences really narrows down your career options, !
lol well im stuffed in that case then!!
I've taken re, french, psy and eng lang.
I'm not sure but i think that psy helps with law (if you take law at uni)
History definitely sounds good for you then, maybe you could do;
history, law psychollogy and eng lit??
I'm doing history, which is intense but definitely worth it.
If you're thinking of going into law, maybe you should think about politics? I'm doing it atm and I absolutely love it, so much so that I'm doing it next year. From my class of 11, 7 of them are doing law next year, and they've all said that it's really helpful.
That said, you really should do something that you know you'll enjoy. Don't do politics if you're not prepared to follow the news religiously and be prepared to argue your point of view.
I could recommend English Lit, as well, but it's another ridiculously intense subject.
I took Biology which I hated but it helped get me into the uni I am at now. I also took psychology which I again hated in the first year but grew to love in the second.
I had a friend take politics and she really isn't the sort of person to do that but she loved it and now studys it at uni.
I would say go with your strengths and the subjects you enjoy rather than with what your mum wants you to do. Out of that list I took History, Law, Politics and English Literature. I also took up psychology but dropped it because I didn't find the A Level paticularly interesting. Be aware of not giving yourself too many essay subjects though. I think if you are interested in psychology then psychology with biology and a couple of the others would be a good idea.
Out of my A Levels I enjoyed English Literature the best because of the variety of texts we studied. Maybe philosophy and ethics would be helpful if you are interested in psychology?
^ I swear you get the same amount of UCAS points for everything?
With Law, it's either something you'll love or hate because you have to learn a hell of a lot.
As mentioned before, just choose subjects that you like. I personally really enjoy Psychology, but, if you don't really like writing essays, it can be a pain.
I loved taking English Lit and psychology, but be prepared to do quite a lot of essay writing if you pick those two. In fact, all your choices look like they're going to result in lots of essays.
I wasn't aware that no sciences narrowed your options down, but if you're thinking of that, I took Human Biology (no plants included!) which I found fascinating.
Anyway, pick the ones you think you'd enjoy the most, since you're more likely to be motivated to do the work if you enjoy the subject.
For those doubts that swirl all around us
For those lives that tear at the seams
We know… we’re not what we’ve seen
For this dance we’ll move with each other
There ain’t no other step than one foot
Right in front of the other
I never took A Levels being in New York but I was history, art history, psychology, international relations student (3 different degrees) at uni/college. I used to set my courses by the amount of reading I would have to do. If I took English lit. I would take a science class with it instead of another course heavy on reading. A lit. and history class at same time is trouble for me because I know I would fall behind since I cant sit reading that long. If I sang while I read I might have felt differently - but I would have made a lot of enemies.
