Does water for tea have to be boiled?

I always boil water for tea - either on the stove or in the microwave. One day last week I was in a rush and just used hot water from the tap/sink. I can't say it tasted bad - then again I am not even usually a tea drinker.

Is it dangerous to use hot water from sink? I Googled around and didn't see much. I saw something about more minerals and deposits contained in tap water (due to water heaters) but I didn't see anything about hot water from the tap being dangerous per se.

While I am thinking of it - would leaving tea bags in cold water (for a hour or more) work? I know RYL knows its tea.

Well hot water isn't distilled like boiled is.

But to say it's dangerous to use hot, is an overstatement I think.

When I was younger, and not allowed to use the kettle, I made tea using the hot tap.
My dad said I shouldn't do that, because the water isn't clean, as it's gone through the boiler.
I don't know if that's just our boiler, but the water's cleaner if you boil it in the kettle...
Hasn't done me any damage though. =]

So I guess, if it doesn't taste bad, then it should be alright....?

Well hot water even looks cloudy so I can see why people could think is unhealthy. It probably does have more "minerals" in it but the most expensive bottled water is always said to have more minerals in it as well. Maybe tap water is super healthy lol!

Did you find tea tasted pretty much the same? I am a coffee drinker so my tea experience is limited

its not dangerous its just not as "clean" as boiled water - but my mum refuses to drink any tap water like a lot of people because it might have some things in it - but thats only very very small levels id assume.

i guess if its clean enough to wash my dishes and cups in then its clean enough to drink :) i may be wrong

I don't think it tasted quite as good, but this is like 10 years ago, so I can't be sure.

I was thinking in terms of iced tea for summer. Usually I boil water and then put tea in water - but then I chill it anyway. So I was wondering if it would be so bad to put tea bags in a pitcher of unboiled water in the morning and then left it for the day. Maybe I can save a step? I will have to do some experimenting.

It's easier if you get a huge bottle and fill it with water, then put like 6 teabags in and then leave it in the sun all day. Then you put in lemon juice and sugar.
That's how you make 'Sun Tea', me and my dad make it in summer and it's really really good. Something about the sun heating up the water makes it taste differant to normal iced tea for some reason.

It depends on what sort of tea you are drinking. Regular black tea should be made with boiled water in order to get the full flavour of the tea from the bag. If you're drinking something like white tea, green tea or earl grey you should use hot, but not boiling, water. This is because you will scald the tea and leave yourself with a bitter-tasting cuppa.

Oh that sounds like a good idea. I only drink cold tea in warm weather anyway. Guess I'll have sun tea in summers and tap tea in winters lol

the water has to be freshly boiled. the second the kettle clicks off that's when I pour.
It just helps the bag brew better and keeps the tea warm for longer.

as has been said it depends on the type of tea.

However, for iced tea the reason you use boiling water and then chill it is the same reason as that for iced coffee - basically if you use cold water you end up with a really bitter flavour. I am not sure as to why, I was told once but I can't remember :/ I tried it last year though as I didn't believe the person who told me lol
