They don't generally teach American history in schools over here, just British history. You might get the odd bit thrown in (we learnt a little about Columbus and Native Americans at about age 12/13), but we've got so much of our own history that it's all pretty focused on that.
Any bits of American history I know have all been learnt through general life osmosis!

I did my GCSE's while I lived in Wales (10 years ago, things may well have changed), I'm not sure if it's different there but we did quite a bit about America.

I am pretty sure we learned nothing about America in history (or geography to be fair). From what I can gather American history would be quite an interesting and useful topic. All I learned at GCSE level was about the Russian Revolution and *possibly* Nazi Germany (I learned about that a few times over the years and still know nothing).

I do think that in UK schools we are not actually taught very useful stuff. I came away from school with no knowledge of where countries were and no idea how America even 'began' for want of a better term. Its like they just focus on certain bits.

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

NOPE! Learned about coastal erosion and other such nonsense. Or I might have shown more interest!

Thats so weird!

Although its true, schools do focus on certain things....tis impossible to teach everything and you can blame the government :P x

For my history GCSE we had three sections, Germany, America and Russia. I went to two different high schools, in the high school where I took my GCSE's they covered British history in the lower years.

In geography I remember learning all the countries in Europe and each country's capital city, learning about other countries, effects of erosion, weather patterns, each different type of cloud etc.

I don't remember a lot of it now, but I suppose that's because I didn't need it in everyday life.

I liked learning about the UK because things like the Rebecca riots, men taking their wife's clothes to wear while protesting and wrecking toll gates, made history lessons more entertaining

*^^^i don't remember any of that!

We did Romans, ancient Egyptians, Tudors and Vikings in primary school, and then some medieval history, both world wars, Vietnam war (I guess that was American history!), Hillsborough tragedy in secondary school.

My memories of geography are making water sensing thingies out of metal clothes hangars and colouring in many maps. We did quite a lot on erosion, water cycle, formation of rivers/valleys etc. very little about where counties are!!
