Sandwiches

From my experience there's an wide variety of name for sandwiches in the UK and abroad. So what do you call a piece of cheese* between 2 pieces of bread?

* other fillings are available

Is it just a piece of cheese? Is it cold or hot? Too many variables here.

I will say I have never heard of any of the above listed words other than sandwich. I use a different word for hot sandwich like items than I do for cold ones though and it also can depend on what kind of bread item.

Any filling, Auror.

I think you guys across the pond use the word sandwich for more things than we do. Or like... we use a whole load of alternative words, as above. =P

Also Tamo, I agree that butty is definitely for warm stuff. Chip butty, bacon butty.

Isn't sarnie just a shortening of sandwich?

And can someone explain sanger? Never even heard that before.

I would say a sandwich is a cold thing with some type of filling in between two slices of bread.

Anything hot, toasted, grilled, etc. or not on just plain bread would have a different name.

Maybe I am abnormal though.

A grilled cheese toastie is still a sandwich to me. =P

And a hot bacon sandwich.

We've really opened a can of worms here!

I call it a sandwich. I really love sandwiches though, they're so underrated. Also, moar lesbianz.

I chose cheese because I didn't want any vegetarians/vegans saying that they don't eat meat if I chose a meat based example. Whereas vegans eat cheese.

Vegans don't eat cheese

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

This is reminding me of a debate I've seen somewhere recently about how vegan cheese shouldn't be called cheese or veggie burgers shouldn't be called burgers.

I heard of a vegan who didn't know mayonnaise wasn't vegan once.
It's perfectly reasonable to assume someone may not know that vegans don't eat cheese

Lol np!
I read something like that when the vegan steak bake came out

Shocking. =o

Maybe they were one of these fashionable vegans who just like calling themselves vegan but don't really follow or understand it.

As a vegan, I call them fake meat and fake cheese, fake mayo, etc.. But that might just be me.
