Urine Drug Tests

Hi,

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

Can Sertraline (Zoloft) show up as a false positive for Benzo's on a urine drug test?

Many thanks.

I don't know, but I doubt it - surely the point of it is that it tests for specific drugs?

How come you're asking?

I've just googled, and apparently Sertraline does cause a false positive for benzos. Apologies!

I don't know for sure, and wouldn't really want to say if I did.

If you are concerned it is probably be a good idea to inform the person ordering the test as they may be able to select a different analytical method that gives a clearer fingerprint of the metabolites present. E.g. both substances may have one metabolite in common but have other metabolites that are unique from one another and thus give them an idea whether there is a risk of a false positive or not.

Also, I hope this is not the case and I'm not say that it is likely to be the case, but if you know that you may come back positive for benzos, please be honest.

As said, these can often interacts with other meds and but it may depend on the individual test. Really, if you're taking Sertraline then tell them that if you gave the test and then they can see if there's a cross over in that test and will also be aware of why it may be positive for yourself.

I am worried that this thread may now divulge into an area where it gives out info about what interacts with what on drugs tests which can lead to illegal activity or lying about tests whether or not this is what the plan of the OP is. Also, this forum really is about asking for advice about your own problems or meds you're on, not how a test may or may not interact and therefore I am now going to close this thread.

If you want to discuss this decision then feel free to PM me,
Kim, First Aid Advisor
