Local Theater Kid

I used to make posts here about local high school plays/musicals I went to. Some people don't think much of high school plays, but I discovered that a lot of the kids have been training/performing since they were 7 years old. A high school cast is nothing to automatically dismiss.

I saw one kid a few years ago and she really stood out. I followed her on Youtube etc since her vids were so good (she's a bit of flake too lol) She was nominated for local theater awards 3 years in a row but never won (something she often joked about).

Tonight I was reading a New York City paper and found out the kid was picked out of 30,000 to be next Maria in West Side Story remake. She had a few thousand followers on Youtube and now its a few hundred thousand in just a few days. Its fun to see local people "blow-up".

We’ll find a way to fight it, we always have.
It's not how tragically we suffer but how miraculously we live.

It is! There also seems to be a lot of such stories taking place locally. I'm near NY City but these aren't city kids even though the connections are easier to make.

Another girl - 12 years old and living in a forgotten area of Hudson Valley - taught herself ukulele and wrote songs. She won a Simon Cowell TV talent show, and last summer she was performing at Madison Square Garden with Imaging Dragons (she's all of 14 now). Her friends at school didn't even know she sang. Her mum took her to a coffee shop (I could walk to it right now) to get her used to singing in public. Even now that she's famous she does surprise appearances at the coffee shop. She's a really nice kid.

People here probably heard about this. These singers are local to me (from Ireland) but its a similar story. At an underfunded school without a music program, a teacher noticed some kids singing around the school. A choir was created despite lack of anyone able to teach the kids. Last Dec. the kids recorded a video of them singing song from "A Star Is Born". They only had one rehearsal (the story goes) before recording and many were shocked at how good the singers were. Since posting, the video has been seen 40 million times on various media sites. The Facebook bit going around makes a lot out of the boys look of "adoration" for the girl singing with him. In any case, I'm so tired of pop music hype that I really like these regular kids that come out of nowhere.

Turns out there was a first version of the Shallow recording but a kid in the background (behind singer) was picking his ears and eating stuff lol (1:20 into vid).
