The Perks of Being a Wallflower & the poem from it... (could trigger)

Does anyone else love this book? It's amazing, but could be slightly triggery. I think its amazing though, it gives me shivers everytime I read it, and the poem makes me cry, I can't read it aloud without getting choked up!

Here's the poem, it's so sad...

A person, A paper, A promise by Dr Earl Reum

Once on a yellow piece of paper with green lines
he wrote a poem
And he called it "Chops"
because that was the name of his dog
And that's what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and a gold star
And his mother hung it on the kitchen door
and read it to his aunts
That was the year Father Tracy
took all the kids to the zoo
And he let them sing on the bus
And his little sister was born
with tiny toenails and no hair
And his mother and father kissed a lot
And the girl around the corner sent him a
Valentine signed with a row of X's
and he had to ask his father what the X's meant
And his father always tucked him in bed at night
And was always there to do it
Once on a piece of white paper with blue lines
he wrote a poem
And he called it "Autumn"
because that was the name of the season
And that's what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and asked him to write more clearly
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because of its new paint
And the kids told him
that Father Tracy smoked cigars
And left butts on the pews
And sometimes they would burn holes
That was the year his sister got glasses
with thick lenses and black frames
And the girl around the corner laughed
when he asked her to go see Santa Claus
And the kids told him why
his mother and father kissed a lot
And his father never tucked him in bed at night
And his father got mad
when he cried for him to do it.
Once on a paper torn from his notebook
he wrote a poem
And he called it "Innocence: A Question"
because that was the question about his girl
And that's what it was all about
And his professor gave him an A
and a strange steady look
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because he never showed her
That was the year that Father Tracy died
And he forgot how the end
of the Apostle's Creed went
And he caught his sister
making out on the back porch
And his mother and father never kissed
or even talked
And the girl around the corner
wore too much makeup
That made him cough when he kissed her
but he kissed her anyway
because that was the thing to do
And at three a.m. he tucked himself into bed
his father snoring soundly
That's why on the back of a brown paper bag
he tried another poem
And he called it "Absolutely Nothing"
Because that's what it was really all about
And he gave himself an A
and a slash on each damned wrist
And he hung it on the bathroom door
because this time he didn't think
he could reach the kitchen.

this is the first day of my life
Iím glad I didnít die before I met you
But now I donít care I could go anywhere with you
And Iíd probably be happy

I love this book.
"Sometimes, I look outside, and I think that a lot of other people have seen this snow before. Just like I think a lot of other people have read these books before. And listened to those songs. I wonder how they feel tonight."
My favourite quote from the book. =]

I've not read this book for a while. I do rather like it.

It was because someone posted that poem on another board a few years ago that I went in search of the book. I love it! Absolutely love it!

You made up your mind to torture mine!
If you read a scar like a book, you will relise the story in which you over look
red ribbons were weaving
upon the young girls skin.
a trail of red weaved deep,
caused by pain from within

I love the book.
The main character- Charlie- is different from others and always thinks too much.
He writes letters to another person and the reader gets to know Charlie, his life and all the people arround him.
The book is in a way a book about mental illnesses and it could trigger some people, so be careful while you are reading it.

amazing book.

i liked it a lot, i think the way it was written, although it was full of feeling, was actually quite emotionally distant and cold.
i like that you get to know him but as though you were inside of him, you sort of think like him after a while...

and i love books that dont have to say things but that you just know.
this one is a mix of stating the obvious and not saying anything at all.

its great, and that poem sends shivers down my spine.

so we walked, into the darkness,
and i have not missed sunshine since.
you challenged everything i knew
& i was happily undone.

now let me forget you.

It is super.

I think Charlie cries too much though. Whenever I read it I get the urge to shake him.

strange thoughts come into your head and you better think them.

I love this book, just got it out recently when I moved and read through it again. What is the real title of that poem and does anyone know if Chbosky wrote it? I think he did but I've never been sure...

Chbosky didn't write the poem. The title and the author are in the original post! It's called 'A Person, A paper, A promise' and its by Dr Earl Ruem.

im glad this book was mentioned. i read it in high school, and haven't thought about it in years. i remember it helping me through a hard time when i didn't feel like anyone understood me...but the book explained what i was going through so well. also, i was stoked to read about a character that liked the Smiths.
