postponing self harm

I'm new to this site and I'm not even sure why I'm writing this tbh.
I was clean from self harm for about 8 years untill 3 months ago, when I relapsed a few times. I really hurt my girlfriend with it which is the only reason I don't do it at the moment.
I'm a 25 year old father for crying out loud, I shouldn't self harm, yet the last few weeks I feel urges almost every evening, and it feels like I'm only postponing untill the next relapse, anyone can relate to that?

Hello and welcome to RYL.

I understand what you mean and I sympathise. What helped you stay free from self harm before? Are you getting any help? Might be worth reaching out for some support. Obviously posting here is good too. You don't have to be alone here.

Hi, welcome to RYL. I can relate to how you're feeling, once self harm has been an option it often becomes an option in the future. You can develop new coping strategies though and it's ok to slip up sometimes and then get back on track. I hope the EMDR therapy is useful.

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Is there anything that will help make things a little less chaotic?

I hope therapy helps you.

Life

Ive havent self harmed for 3 yrs and before that it was 9. It never really goes away, it can come back unexpected, like a quiet tornado, starts with a breeze but ends with destruction.

I have been feeling that crazy breeze lately as well. Im in my late 30s, And I should be able to fight and power thru too.

But if it were that easy, there wouldnt be so many of us. Im also new here, finding comfort in those like me. Picking up tidbits to help fight that urge, and figure out my triggers to keep it together.

To my knowledge IT never goes entirely away. You just have to learn how to handle it.

It is. The worst thing I can do is counting the days I've been free. I always slips then.
Seriously ones you've entered this path it will always be there for u. At least that's how it was for me. When I did the first time I knew, this is my way. It'll be there for me & I just need to control it. For better and for worse. But I'm always aware of that it, in a second, can destroy me - if the wrong persons finds out.
