SLR Digital Cameras

Right, for my birthday (grand old age of 21) my mum's offered to get me one of these.

I want one that's not MASSIVE, and pretty easy to use,it's not going to be used professionally or anything,it's a hobby I'm picking back up really.

Under £300 would be ideal (I know that's pushing it a bit,but like I said,I only want the basics at the moment).

Anyone got any suggestions?

The Canon EOS ones (350D will be cheaper now because the 400D's out, but they're not meant to be all that different) are meant to be very good. But, I'm skint and therefore haven't actually got/tried one.

Try asking James? Or Aimee (craola - or she was before, anyway) or Sarah (control freak).

I got one the other day which is cool and really cheap. It was only £130 from Asda. It was a fuji s5600. Photos have turned out well from it.

Think its only soemhing like 5.2, but the pics are very clear and sharp. I think it also has a 10x zoom.

Hmm. Something to look at there. Although 5.2 is a bit low for me,but it sounds pretty good. I mean,if the quality's good and such.

Thanks =]

Ahhh SLRs :)

Im using Cannon 350D at the moment, but when the replacement for the 330D comes out I shall be getting that. I also use a 5D sometimes but thats a few thousand pounds.

The 350D is very good, its 8 MP, the picture quality is very good, photographs can be printed at at least A3 size, I havent tried bigger yet.
Its got a flash and you can take pictures as RAW or jpeg.
I didnt get the lens it comes with, I got the body and a seperate lens which is a macro.
The 400D is much the same, it has a bigger screen- I dont like it as much but thats because im comfortable with mine I think.
There are also Nikon equivilants D40 and D50 I think, im not sure, im not a Nikon person though.

Oh and im pretty sure the Fuji s5600 is a SLR like camera. Not an actually SLR, the main difference is that when you look through the viewfinder of an SLR you see what is actually there- like looking through glass. Looking through the viewfinder of an SLR like camera its a digital image- its not as accurate and not a true SLR.

Why you want an SLR?
Personally I would go for a Lumix with Leica Lense!
http://www.panasonic.co.uk/creative/...eb-s/index.htm

I think you can get the one above for £300 if you check out pricerunner etc. Its Exactly the same camera as the Leica but for half the price. You ger panasonic technology and leica quality!

This one is small enough to be compact and take about easily yet had enough gadgets and fab lense to get some top quality piccies!!

Oooh and i think it has that lovely retro old skool 35mm look about it too! *nods* Tres Chic!

I have a 35mm SLR and a compact. I broke my compact tho! havent been able to afford another.
The SLR got dumped a while back.
I was recommending the compact as Ash had said she didnt want something massive. The Leica sprang to mind because of the lense quality and the fact its extremely neat but had the manual focus ring for more creativity. The kinda thing you could do some fairly decent creative work with esp with photoshop too, but still be able to take it out with you for the day or holiday and not look like an American tourist in Stratford!

You'd have been more than welcome to ask me of course Ash

My vote also goes to the Canon D350 - ideally the D400, but I think that will be out of the price range I suspect. Funnily enough, a friend of mine has lent me her D400 for the week and I've just been having a play with it. Absolutely cracking little camera and, like all Canon kit, really well put together too.

So, basically if you go for one of the above, you won't go far wrong!

I dont like the D400 as much as the 350, only because of the large white screen that drives me insane though.
Fingers crossed the D30 replacement comes out soon.
