Self injury, dissociation and smoking

Hi,

Lately my borderline personality disorder has got really intense and controlling and i'm spending a lot of time dissociated. Almost every time I dissociate and injure myself in some way even though I don't remember doing it. I've never found anything that helps to stop/delay dissociating. However smoking does help to lessen the sudden onset of it and sometimes even keeps it at bay a little. However I desperately want to give up as I know its not doing me any good. But i'm scared of what will happen in terms of urges/dissociating if I do quit.

Has anyone got any advice or things that work for them?

Thanks
x

Hiya, sorry to hear you've been struggling with dissociation and self-harm.

Do you think that possibly replacing smoking with something else could help? Perhaps an e-cigarette? Or could you try drinking a very cold icy glass of water to see if that helps?

Really hope things improve soon and someone with more personal experience comes along to help out.

Take care.

Hiya. I'm sorry you've been struggling.

I find that cold water (cold bath or shower/running hands under cold tap/ drinking cold water) helps to delay my dissociation and sometimes even lessens the severity of the dissociative state.

It's worth a try, eh?

Take care

i don't know a ton about this, but i know that a lot of what is discussed to help with dissociating is grounding techniques... i really couldn't tell you much about them, but finding someone who does, or doing some research on your own, might be helpful
