Hello everyone! Just thought i'd pop in and say my part.
I was about 13 I think when I first joined RYL, although before that I would lurk ruin but never actually became a member.
When I first joined I was x i am just make believe x (Cringe...), then I was Sanctimonia, and then Askari. Then I missed the deadline for the switchover to V3 so I became breifly Road_Kill and finally Athiri. Pheeww that's a lot of names.
Anyway so I'm never in chat so a lot of people don't recognise me I'm sure, and my reliance on the site tends to wax and wane; I'll pop online every few months for a year and then suddenly I'm back posting every night. But I do have some fond memories of RYL. I went to a few meets many years ago, I remember meeting Libby (AmyLeeWannabe) a few times at them, and Happywonderings (now idea where she is now/if her screen name changed?).
I've been meaning to go to another meet for years now, but being in my second year at uni it's just hard to find the time :\
Was this place really called 'ruinyourlife' or have I misunderstood?! That's ... a pretty crap name for a support site ...
It made for some interesting conversations between members and their parents when they were observed on Ruin Your Life lol. On the flip side, the bubble wrap wasn't on, and the photos on the site used to scare some people into the straight and narrow quite readily. There was more "recovery" on ruin imo

I think RYL is deffinitely more recovery orientated since ruin, I also think that this is bad if you just don't feel ready to recover or whatever but I can see why this is and everything.
I really haven't made that point very well but what ever. I hope you get what I mean.

Just to set the record straight, so far as I can, Ruin was created by Harley to oblige James Whitwell - a slightly dark character who'd travelled a lot and just written his first book. He then killed himself, probably inadvertently, through a combination of drink and drugs. I well remember his funeral service, attended by hundreds of Suffolk farmers and friends - and just how distraught his mother was at the following wake, poor bereft and heartbroken woman.
James, Harley and I then had a meeting a few weeks later to discuss what to do about the site and, as a tribute to James (Whitwell) it was decided to keep it going - Harley being the Webmaster. Shortly after, we all agreed that the site should be renamed Recover, as something more positive, and so it's been ever since. Harley's done the work from the age of 17/18 (can't remember which) while James and I have lent support whenever we can. I don't in anyway matter, but RYL and the support it provides has been an important part of my life for the past several years ...
