People do it for different reasons. Sometimes we just need another way of hurting ourselves or it can be a way of visually seeing the pain we feel inside. Everyone's different and no self-harm is the same. What do you think is causing the self-harm for you at the moment?

it sounds like you feel like no one is listening to you right now... feeling like that is very isolating, and makes one feel unimportant. but you aren't alone, and you are important... you can talk here about whatever is going on, and if you are patient, people will respond... well, i will at least, and i know some other people who i'm fairly certain would too...
this is my magical medicine cabinet. Left to right they contain: courage, hope, calmness, and strength.
The magical part: They NEVER run out, so borrow some any time you want.
I find when I want to carve words into myself (which I've done and regretted) then writing them onto yourself in pen (red pen if you like) can help a little bit with the urges.

I suppose with carving it into your skin, it is more permanent and it's visible, it's not in your head, it's right there in front of you.
Especially if you cut it quite deeply into your skin, and it scars for a long time.
If it is there on your skin, it feels like it's there, right there on you, it's there and it's real and it's "spoken" and it's probably going to be there, kind of screaming at you with this word, for a while.
It's a visual, you know?
Maybe it's because of that?
Either way, carving words, or cutting at all, in general, doesn't help, especially if you want to express something, if you want to say something to someone. Perhaps writing a letter would be more useful?
something a bit more permanent than ink is henna... though it is more expensive.
i just wanted to say though... putting negative words on your skin feels like a huge releif at first, and even afterwards it can still feel... fufilling?... to see them. but having those words there can also keep you down, and keep you feeling those negative things about yourself, when what you really need to do is learn to see yourself in a better, positive, or at least neutral light...

I have a word, and I hate it being seen, so always keep it covered because it reminds me constantly of how 'weak' I was - much more so that then rest of my scars, because it shows everyone exactly what I was thinking right at that moment, and I hate it.
How are you doing today?
It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.
No-one gets remembered for the things they didn't do.
We won't all be here this time next year,
so while you can take a picture of us.
We're definitely going to hell,
but we'll have all the best stories to tell.
